Repeating Timer

I am working with a custom plugin and have the requirement to repeatedly spawn a thread on an interval (every few seconds). I've been unsuccessful thus far - think I'm creating some conflicts with the way the threading works in Indigo. Has anyone done anything like this or have some simple idea on how I can proceed?
