dom.io 2.2 — hands-free Indigo control in CarPlay
This release is all about the car. Domio 2.2 adds a proper conversational
voice assistant to CarPlay — you talk to your house the way you'd talk to a
passenger, and it controls your Indigo devices, scenes, and thermostats while
you keep your eyes on the road.
What it's like to use
There are three ways to start, from most to least hands-free:
1. Just ask Siri — "Hey Siri, ask Domio to turn on the hall lights."
Completely touch-free: no screen, no buttons.
2. Press the steering-wheel voice button, then talk — handy and quick, though
it's a button press.
3. Tap the Talk button on Domio's CarPlay screen — best when you're parked.
All three beat poking at the screen while you're moving. Once you're in, just
say what you want:
- "Turn on the hall lights."
- "Run my Goodnight scene." (your Indigo Action Groups are treated as scenes)
- "Set the office to twenty degrees."
- "Is the garage door still open?"
The difference from the old grid-of-buttons approach is that it's a real
back-and-forth conversation, not one-shot commands. You can follow up without
starting over:
▎ "Dim the lounge." → "Done, set to 40%." → "A bit more." → "Now 25%." →
▎ "Actually, just turn it off."
You can interrupt it mid-sentence if it's telling you more than you need, and
it keeps the thread of the conversation across turns. Replies stream back as
it speaks, so there's no long pause while it "thinks." Your CarPlay favourites
also show as quick-glance tiles now, with simple letter icons so you can spot
them without reading.
It's designed to be genuinely eyes-free — with "Hey Siri, ask Domio…" you can
control the house without ever touching or even looking at the screen.
Getting started
1. Update to Domio 2.2 and make sure your normal Indigo connection (reflector
+ API key) is working.
2. Devices you want reachable need "Display on Remote" enabled in Indigo, same
as the rest of the app. Action Groups show up as scenes automatically.
3. In Domio's settings, make sure your voice assistant's AI provider is
configured — it runs on whichever LLM you've set up (cloud or a local model).
4. Plug into CarPlay, then say "Hey Siri, ask Domio to…", press your
steering-wheel voice button, or tap Talk — and ask away.
A bit of the tech, for the curious
Two Apple mechanisms work together here. "Hey Siri, ask Domio…" rides App
Intents / Siri, so you can kick things off entirely by voice. Inside CarPlay,
the new carplay-voice-based-conversation entitlement provides the on-screen
Talk button, the steering-wheel-button hand-off into Domio's own conversation
(rather than only Siri), and the multi-turn conversational UI itself — it's a
relatively new CarPlay capability, separate from the older list/grid
templates, and one of the Apple-gated entitlements, so it had to be reviewed
and granted by Apple rather than just switched on.
The assistant resolves what you say against your live Indigo device list (it
waits for the full list to load before acting, which fixed an early bug where
commands could land on stale state), turns it into device/scene/thermostat
commands over Domio's existing Indigo API, and confirms back to you. Responses
are streamed with prompt caching to keep latency and cost down, and there's a
multi-turn loop with barge-in handling so interruptions and follow-ups work
naturally.
Notes & what's next
This is a first release of the conversational mode, so I'd love feedback on
how it copes with your device naming and the kinds of phrasing you actually
use in the car. Next up (2.3) is adding Matter devices to Indigo straight from
your phone — more on that soon.
