Using Fing as a new way to detect smartphone presence

That means, that if during the night I will put it in "airplane mode", it will be set as "away"...that means, no more "airplane mode" during the night

check ~/find/fing.log it gives you the info as delivered by FING. if that does not reflect the changes then disable usePING for that device and see if that helps..

OR GET AN ASUS ROUTER that works very well ~ 2 seconds response time when I come home ..

Karl, is it possible to use plugin to scan network devices if they have specific port open and detect that way if the device is on/off? Just asking because many low powered devices are replying to ping even though they are in sleep/low power state. Apple TV is one example of devices acting like this.

the power sleep mode of wifi battery devices is special I believe as compared to e.g. apple TVwifi ==> it is powered. I looked at the WIFI status page on the router for my apple TV and it never went into the PSM mode like an iPhone.

I was trying to "ping" specific ports. but after 2 days gave up. Its not really "ping" but there are tools that can do it. .. it gets complicated very fast..

Might look into it sometime in the future.

I think this is the correct forum for this. Today I noticed that fingscan seemed to take longer than usual to detect my (or rather my iPhone's) return home, so I checked the fingscan (4.10.25) plugin config and changed the Min bf. HOME can re-trigger: to 1 minute. The default value was five, although I can't remember if I set it to that before, since it used to trigger almost immediately when I arrived home (definitely not five minutes). Anyway, I click CONFIRM and then Save. I get a red message to the left of the Cancel/Save buttons "Error validating fields. Hover over the red field labels above to see the error reason." Except there are no red field labels, and I get the following message in the log:

select a value for seconds to sleep ..., the default is 1 but sometimes it shows "select an item.." that translates into a blank and then the conversion to an integer fails.

will post a new version where that exception is caught.

Ok I'll try that when I'm back. Out of curiosity did the update reset the home trigger to 5 minutes as well? I didn't even think about recofiguring the plugin after the update.

the 5 minutes for HOME is defined as follows: if it triggered AWAY , it will wait 5 minutes before it can trigger HOME. It will not wait 5 minutes before it triggers the first time.

This is useful if you have phone that goes in an out when its WIFI disconnects and reconnects.
When you set these parameters to zero it will immediately trigger in these circumstances home/away/home every x minutes if your cell phones goes to sleep and wakes up again.

Since it initialized I assume it is OK. I went to the configure menu, to check to see if I had to update anything (like I forgot to last time), and get about 19 or so of these messages in the log (they differ by the MACnumberXXFilter) when the config menu opens (not changing anything):

Please renter your password in config. See if it still does that. This error message is due to the fact that the finglog file is not changing. Most likely fing is not running properly. And the reason for this is the password is wrong.

Thanks for the reply. When I reopened the config dialog, there were no errors in the log, like before. My "password is already stored", and it has not changed. I'll make your suggested change tomorrow, and report back. I'm trying to tie up a few loose ends here before sleep.

Hi folks - first time posting. Just purchased and installed Pro last night!

I've got FingScan up and working however I have a question: I have set up my devices on the network with a 255.255.0.0. submask.

Basically using

• x.x.1.x as basic infrastructure (airports, etc)
• x.x.2.x as smart/embedded devices
• x.x.3.x for things like my Apple TV, Playstation etc
• x.x.4.x for my wireless devices in a reserved range and DHCP clients above the reserved range

My question is - once FingScan is up and running, it only scans the x.x.1.x range. Is there a way to make it only scan x.x.4.100-255 range? Or do I need to have my indigo server in the x.x.4.x IP range?
