Using Fing as a new way to detect smartphone presence

Karl,
With iOS 8 and this randomization of mac addresses, will this impact fing from tracking presence? I'm running into problems with my wife's phone knowing when she's home and when she's not. I'm also getting some odd information between her IP address, the mac address listed on her phone and the mac address listed on fing. Not sure where to go to fix this and can't find anything online on how to disable the randomization.

Could you be a bit more specific. Ie random.
Could you look at fing.log. It should show the information as presented by fing. Send me an email if you like.

I am pretty sure that the fake MAC addresses are only used during the WiFi probing -- they are not actually changing the devices MAC address... once you connect to a WiFi network your device's real MAC address is presented to the network. Therefore, I would think fing would be unaffected by the feature.

I wasn't sure what it was initially, thought it was sighthound or security spy causing too much load however as I disabled these one by one the problem still occurred. It now appears to have been the fing plugin as i've not had a hang since this was disabled.

if you have a device thats constantly changing the mac number it looks like a new device is joining every second. I have seen this kind of behavior happening in a hotel. A device was changing its MAC number several times a second .
This will make fingscan create and delete devices constantly.

You can check if that is happening at your home by looking at documents/fing/fing.log

I'm having this issue. I think it has to do with the applescript relaunch. I can get it to work just fine, but then overnight the problem happens.. Sometimes I'll log in to my (headless) server and I'll get a dialog that says the application is not running (fing). I have never gotten this plugin to run properly on my system...which sucks, because I could really use it. But I don't have time to do troubleshooting for the author, so I'm not gonna complain.

For some reason it looks like fingscan is making my indigo hang - I look in the logs and this is what I see:

could you check the fing.log file is there are any new entries - just double click on it and the console view will pop up.

also try:
open terminal window and enter
sudo fing

then you will need to enter your password.

if you see things happening without issues fing is installed properly. if you see error messages your will need to reinstall ring,

which version of FIGSCAN are you using. the applescript version is more than a year old, check out the fingscan program download

I had been on 13, but now I've upgraded to 21. Still getting the above error, and I get a dialog on the screen that says " FINGSCAN cannot communicate with Indigo, please restart Indigo"

Are you sure you are using the python version? This looks like version 2-0-5. That is about 1 year old and has the general OSX applescript issue with communicating with indigo.

could you check out version 4-10-21? http://forums.indigodomo.com/viewtopic. ... 34&t=12787

you might have the apple script version still running in the background: check if in activity monitor you find an application: FINGSCAN. you should kill that one.
Also if you find 2 FING applications, kill both. The new version will handle it and restart FING. Having 2 FING running at the same time might create some issues.

I just tried to uninstall find and fingscan completely so that I could erase all previous versions/scripts/etc. Thought I did - even deleted the preferences file - but when I reinstalled fingscan it already knew my password, so clearly I missed something. Can you tell me how to make sure the old one is completely uninstalled?
I have, I think, upgraded pretty regularly but I suspect there are vestiges of old versions hanging out on my system.
BTW, don't think I've said it before, I really appreciate you working on this. Ever since I upgraded my routers to the new 802.11ac, I've missed being able to do presence checking with the smartphones. I've yet to get fingscan to work reliably for more than a few days, but that may be an issue with my system. So thank you, and sorry to be a pain. If you have uninstall instructions that will completely wipe fingscan from my system, along with any associated scripts, etc., I'll give it a shot.

The password is stored in the keychain not in indigo. Does it show the version number when you start it? It should be 4-... Don't recall the number. I am out right now. If it shows the 4-xxx we are at the next step. The old AppleScript version is fingscan.app. The plugin is fingscan.plugin Delete / rename the .app

Also fingscan.app gets relaunched by an action/schedule. Check if you have something like fingscan relaunch schedule. And disable it.

Now I think we're onto something. The relaunch schedule was enabled....
So about that "fing" folder in my Documents folder...does it still need to be there? Can I delete anything else besides fingscan.app?
