Using Fing as a new way to detect smartphone presence

Plugins that users have built. NOTE: plugins that were developed for Indigo versions older than 2022.1 will have to be updated to work with Indigo 2022.1 (Python 3 - see this blog post for details). If the plugin listed here is not in the Plugin Store (which will show updated plugins) then you will need to ask on the appropriate thread below if it has been updated and where you get get the update.

Karl,
To add some information: I just got home today and logged into my headless server. First, all of my devices were last detected at 18 minutes after midnight. Fingscan had an error dialog that said Fing was not running. My event log was full of the same errors that Shutter reported earlier today.
So it sounds like the 19 minutes after midnight restart isn't happening, which is probably throwing the error.

Separately, it seems I'm having some issues with Fing's accuracy. My iPhones are showing as expired - despite the fact they're here in the house and connected to wifi. They're plugged in (charging). This seems to happen to most of my wifi mobile devices. Their status never updates. Any ideas why? They both sync wirelessly.

Is this of any use?

One thing I noticed is the way my password is displayed in the log. In the first instance password entered=password: "xxxxxxxxxx" it is shown backwards with extra alphanumeric characters at both ends, but later on at FING cmd= echo 'xxxxxxxxxx' it is shown correctly. Is that normal?

Simon: some clarification:
- you replaced the device names with XXXXXX?
- the password in the log file is not shown in clear text only if you log the actually sudo xxx -s fing command its is show as it is.. my little homegrown encryption method..is exposed now :lol:
just saw in your log file that your base network is 192.168.0.x mine is 192.168.1.x should work, but will check if that poses a problem.

the log file looks as its should look... is it working now??

could you check ~/documents/fing/fing.log
it should show all devices coming back online with time stamp. If they are not in there they are offline.

fingscan should show them the same way. ...BUT if you have enabled PING in-between FING cycles, it will overwrite the FING info (set them to "down" ) if the devices do not answer to the pings

Also could you install v 4.10.13

Simon. looking at your log file:

192.xxx.0.13 is not answering to pings:

It means. FINSCAN has launched a shell script with a loop of pings for IP number ....13 and ...13 has not answered in 2.9 seconds. Hence it assumes it is "down". Then it killed the shell with the ping loop for that IP number.

This indicates that your phone is offline or you have a device that is not answering any PINGS like for example a VONAGE voip box.

Hi Karl,

I did replace the device names with XXXXXX - didn't fancy broadcasting my naming convention. :wink:

It appears to be working now. Whatever you did seems to have fixed it.

Karl,

Just got back from a fantastic break, can I ask did you find the problem that was causing the Mac to lock up? I've gone back and cannot see any reference to a fix.

I saw you are using snitch. I tried that and had some problems, but not as bad as you described. I did some tuning with # of files open, but is it.

Difficult to test if I can't reproduce the problem.

Fixed: minor inconvenience...

FINGSCAN restarts at 00:19 every day on its own .. just to make sure..
If the startup went very fast (~ 30 seconds) it might have restarted twice in the same minute. It could still be 00:19 when the second restart time check happened.
This version will restart start once only i.e. will not check restart timestamp for several minutes after start.

the latest version (4-10-4) previously posted seems to work fine under OSX 10.10 Yosemite

My hard drive died so I decided to put in a SSD and reinstall os x. I restored Indigo from backup, but I can't get Fing to work. I tried reinstalling??

I keep getting this in the log every 5 minutes:

(a) did your password change?
(b) you need to INSTALL FING -- copy does not work

try the following:

open terminal window and type:
sudo fing

then enter your password

if the password is the same and it works... FING should work fine ..
Then I need to think about whats wrong

try that first.
