I'm going to start using it more now that I have read some more about it here. I plan on using it for the HVAC for when my wife is home and I'm not.

Lots of possibilities with this.

The iPhone home/away seems to be working well. I did get a couple of random 'iPhone away' messages during the morning when i was at work. i don't fully know why it triggered the away action again.

It seems as if most 'always on' devices like apple tv, roku, sonos always seem to be up. it would be nice to be able to tell from fing if i was actually 'watching/playing' the apple tv or roku.

almost all regular powered devices (non battery) do not disconnect from the network.
They will (1) always answer a ping and (2) send some traffic (I am alive, dial back home eg sonos checks for software updates, etc) which fing captures.

Going to the application layer would require a deep understanding of the individual application and what traffic their generate. That is orders of magnitude more complex.

As for the " couple of random 'iPhone away' messages during the morning " could you share or look into the finglog file. all up's (no downs) are listed there. check the time stamp of the message and try to find if there is anything in finglog around that time. If not its a bug in fingscan.

Thanks.

So beyond the iPhone/device home/away, what other uses do you see for this? It could replace ping checks, but it may still require fewer actions/triggers with ping.

also, regarding the unexpected triggers, i got an 'iPhone is home' message this morning while i was sitting on the sofa. it looks like it was running twice, killed it, re-ran and triggered. but i did not do any of this....the plugin did?. any ideas?

on the restart: it restarts once a day and then 2 are running, after < 1 minutes the old one quits and the new one continues to run the "error" message should be "restart" message

as for uses:

you could setup triggers
- device 1 AND device 2 both not at home then house is empty and may be add some other information from other sensors or indicators see example in the read me
- new IP number added to network

what causes this restart? FING, or your script? Is there a certain schedule/time of day?

its a scheduled action: fingscanrelaunch .. fingscaninstall creates it. you can disable it if you like: uncheck the box at the far left of the line.

I put it in to at least once a day check if its running, i.e. relaunch.

Version 2.0.5
changes:
- when starting from scratch sometimes devices got created twice: if fing had them listed twice i.e. when IP numbers got changed in the last day or so fing has 2 records
- format is better readable - the program reformats things automatically, no info should be lost -- but you could save the device info with the attached utility before installing the new version
- added new variable with name of last added vice: can be used to trigger emials etc when new device is added.
- added utility to
----save devices to a file "fingsavedata"
----sort the ipDevices with rising IP numbers / remove gaps in the listing (if you delete e.g. ipDevice15 out of 30 devices) and
----restore devices in indigo from file.
This nice if you want to sort the variables ipDevicexx with rising IP number.
if you have a trigger on a device you will need to make sure that the device you are triggering on still has the same device number.
This is an applescript fingscansaveandrestoreandsort.scpt in the zip file attached . Please look into the script for details. (click on the file in the ziop container to open it, run it by clicking on "run" please check the options first before you do that

will post on indigo download site next week.

version 2.0.5 is posted at http://www.perceptiveautomation.com/fil ... words=fing

changes:

- better formatting, easy to reading variable listing - although the fonts used are variables space, some effort was made to create aligned columns.
- ipDevsNewDeviceNo variable shows the last added variable i.e. ipDevice35 if that is the last devices that was added to the network. this enables an easy trigger to send emails etc if a new device was added.

If I want to temporarily remove this, what's the procedure?

temporary "remove":

1. uncheck fingscanrelaunch in schedule ( left check box ) that will stop it from relaunching once a day
2. in activity monitor right click on fingscan and select quit (depends on your osx version), that will stop the currently running program

you could delete the variables etc, but before you do it try on the fingsvansvaesortrestore script comment the sort and restore steps. then you have a copy of your existing variables and could restore if you like at a later time by running only the restore step.

restart:
1. check fingscanrelaunch in schedule and either wait some hours or click execute at the bottom right.

have happy holidays and a merry christmas

Karl,
Really appreciate all the hard work you've been putting into this. I'm not running any triggers on it yet - want to see how stable the variables are over a period and understand more about the behavior of my devices on the network.
I have noticed, however, that it seems the install script doesn't actually copy the fingscan script into the documents folder. Every time I update, the old fingscan file is still in documents. I have to manually copy over the fingscan script to replace the old one.
I thought fingscaninstall would copy the file over. If that's not the intended behavior, you might include that in the install instructions. If that is the intended behavior, at least on my system it doesn't work.
Thanks again for all your hard work - and enjoy the holidays!
Best,
Phil

the file is fingscan.app and it goes into ~documents/fing/fingscan.app
That directory also has the following files:
- fingdata = data table for fing, updated once per minute by fing, read by fingscan
-finglog = one line per new / active device over time created and managed by fing could get as large as some Mbytes, read by fingscan
-fingerror = any errors or other messages created by fing , read by fingscan
-parameters = used by fingscan internally
-fingsave = created by fingscansavesortandrestore.scpt to store a copy of the data in indigo

there should be no fingscan.scpt

fingscaninstall.scpt puts it there and and starts fingscan.app. In addition a schedule action fingscan relaunch is added and executed once a day.

A SCPT (script) compared to and APP (compiled script) would have the following issue: It can not continue to run in idle mode i.e. wait for xx seconds without using any cpu time.

hope that helps
