Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Locked)
Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
So I'm suddenly seeing a problem where one of my phones appears at home all the time. The lastSeen variable sometimes gets a value as high as 3 or 4, but then it resets to 0. If I am gone, or I disable wifi on my phone, the state never changes to Away. I have changed my IP and everything. What gives?
I've changed nothing prior to this happening, except a few days ago I installed the Nest Thermostat plugin. But this problem seemed to have started tonight.
EDIT: I've narrowed this down, and it seems like this has something to do with IP parsing in the router logs. It seems like when my phone is, say, 192.168.1.10 and my desktop computer is 192.168.1.102, my phone appears home as long as my desktop computer is accessing the Internet. Can someone duplicate this?

Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
Unless my iPhone is plugged in, it disconnects from the WiFi as soon as it goes into sleep mode. This makes it look like it's always away.
Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
Oops, that might be a bug. In your router log, is there a space or comma after the IP? Try adding that to the search string for the phone device. That might prevent it from those false positives, as long as I don't strip the spaces off, which I might, I'll have to check the code. If that doesn't work, give your phone an IP address above 192.168.1.3X range or above. That will prevent confusion with any .1XX or .2XX IPs.richy240 wrote: EDIT: I've narrowed this down, and it seems like this has something to do with IP parsing in the router logs. I'll try to get to this issue in a few days.
Thanks
Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
Thanks a lot, that's actually exactly what I did: both phones now have an IP in the 50s, so there's no chance of overlap. As for the log, the IPs always seem to be in quotes, so it would be listed as "192.168.1.10" or "192.168.1.11" (WITH the quotes) before I made the change mentioned above.travisc wrote:richy240 wrote: Oops, that might be a bug. And thanks for a great plugin. It's really giving me a lot of control over my automation, except I'm still having a problem with one of our iPhones not checking email in 15-minute increments as it's configured to do (that's how I'm forcing Internet access). But that's not your problem.
Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
Richy, seems like some people had to enable wifi sync with itunes on their device to get it to register the frequency that it was configured. May want to give that a try if you haven't tried it already.
Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
I am a newbie here and need some help please.
I have an airport extreme router and a Mac mini running mountain lion.
I have used airport utility to enable syslog and have it sent to my mac mini (192.168.1.22)
I have installed the Smartphone radar beta version and entered the following:
airport router - 192.168.1.1
password: public - I am not sure if this should be my airport password or the default SNMP name??
I have also entered my iphone MAC address and have it sync over wifi
Question:
I have read all pages in this thread and I am unsure how to enable my mac mini to accept logs. I tried the instruction on page 1 from lharris9 however the syslogd.plist file does not look anything like it should.
Any help would be appreciated.

I seem to have solved some issues. The event log appears to be receiving the syslog. Is there any way to limit the amount of unnecessary info transmitted.
I am getting

Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
Nope. That's an SNMP response to a request made by the plugin every minute. Apple decides what to send. It's all or nothing.
Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
The plug-in has been working flawlessly for me for many months. However, I've just encountered an issue that breaks its functionality for me and I'm trying to solve it.
My home's wireless coverage is a bit spotty because the Airport Extreme is located at one end of the house and the bedrooms are at the other. The signal has always been rather weak in the bedrooms, but still strong enough to reach 2/3 of the bedrooms. In an effort to increase coverage, I put an old Airport Express near the bedrooms and I ran an Ethernet line between it and the Airport Extreme in the family room. I've configured the Express to extend the network. Other than the LED on the Express flashing yellow all the time, we get solid wireless coverage in the bedrooms now along with good data throughput.
Now, the problem: When the iPhones connect to the Express, they are no longer seen by the Extreme. Therefore, the plug-in thinks we're away when we're not. I tried adding the Express's name to the plug-in configuration dialog, but I get an error when it polls it. I pasted the snmpwalk command into the terminal and got this response from the Express:

I googled that message, but did not find anything useful in my effort to solve the problem. Does anyone have a suggested solution? I am already trying to find a way to relocated the Extreme to the center of the house, but that won't be easy with all that is currently plugged into it.No Such Object available on this agent at this OID

Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
Anyone having issues with Mountain Lion and the plugin? I've noticed that since updating it doesn't seem that the plugin is opening the port for syslog connections. According to the debug messages it is opening the port:
Smartphone Radar Debug getConfiguration start
Smartphone Radar Debug closeSocket called
Smartphone Radar Debug STATE: syslog Init
Smartphone Radar Debug openSocket called
Smartphone Radar Debug Opening port 1514
But when I do a sudo lsof -i -P | grep -i "listen" from the terminal I don't see port 1514 open nor can I simply telnet to that port.

Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
I figured it out. On the first generation Airport Express, the SNMP community string is the Airport's password. Once I put that into SPR, it was able to fetch the SNMP data from it. I still had trouble deciphering what it got back from the Airport as I could not find my iPhone's MAC address in the output. In fact, I was having trouble getting my iPhone to connect to it at all. Finally, I decided the easiest fix was to get a new Airport Express. I unplugged the old one, plugged in the new one and it automatically set up exactly as I wished. Now, my iPhone connects to it and SPR is able to see that my iPhone is home, whether it's connected to the Airport Extreme or the new Airport Express.bluenoise wrote:The plug-in has been working flawlessly for me for many months. Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
Hi folks-
Just getting into this smartphone radar plugin, and I'm maybe hitting some barriers.
As far as tech goes:
mac mini on 10.8 Mountain Lion
two iPhones
airport extreme + 2 airport expresses
The Airport Utility 6.1 on Mountain Lion is completely stripped of features pretaining to syslog, etc. so I'm not sure if I can/have to do anything here?
Am I required to enable full logging somehow? I tried to downgrade to Airport Utility 5.6 but its only installable on Lion and older.
I entered in the IP of my airport extreme and the airport password as the snmp community string, but its repeatedly timing out.
Thanks in advance for any insights.

Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
For IP address of your airports, try using their network names instead. For example, if you airport is named "Dining Room," put in "Dining-Room.local" for the name. The community string is usually "public" (without the quotes) unless you change it explicitly. The exception I've found is that the first-gen expresses use the airport password as the community string as noted in my post above.dabido wrote:Hi folks-

Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
Perfect- 'public' worked without the need to change any Airport settings. And I also changed the airport name over to the .local variant just in case it hops around IP addresses with reboots, etc.bluenoise wrote: For IP address of your airports, try using their network names instead. Thanks for the help! Everything seems to be working thus far. Now, to try to leave the house for dinner and see what happens...
Re: Smartphone Radar - Smartphone presence detection (Update
I enabled this on my wife's phone last night, and so far so good. Of course, this is only one night of successful behavior, but I'm hopeful.Dewster35 wrote:Richy, seems like some people had to enable wifi sync with itunes on their device to get it to register the frequency that it was configured. Thanks a lot for the recommendation. I will post again if/when I have a pattern of results to report.
EDIT: Yep, two nights now without her phone going into Away mode, so it looks like this must have done the trick. THANK YOU!
