In theory, you should no longer need to use variables, a plugin has the ability to maintain the state of each zone as well as the panel. If I understand alistair's model, in the case of his plugin, you would define a "device" for each zone in your alarm system you were interested in monitoring. Then, you should be able to define a trigger to watch fa device (zone) to be faulted (On) or cleared (Off) or just any change in state, just as you do with an Insteon device today.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to test alistair's work because my ad2usb is remote from my Indigo Mac. My ad2usb is actually connected to a FreeBSD server in my cellar and I connect to it using TCP. I may get around to adding TCP support to his work, but it might be a while.
