ratgdo with ESPHome
ratgdo with ESPHome
Hi All,
Just installed my ratgdo-disco and tested it via its web interface on my network using its ESPHome firmware. All is working! I will set my MyQ hub on fire and then send it back to Chamberlain!
I'm having a hard time understanding what I need to do next. I believe the ESPHome firmware is what everyone is referring to as the MQTT firmware?
And so then, I think I need three plugins: MQTT Broker, MQTT Connector, and ratgdo GDO Controller. I dont know anything about MQTT, but I gather this is some sort of client-server model. So then I need to do a bunch of configuration of these three plugins.
Alternatively, I gather that I could also use an ESPHome plugin instead? (without any additional hardware I believe).
Finally, ratgdo has an alternative firmware for direct Apple HomeKit integration. So I could use that, integrate it with my Apple home and then interface to Indigo via my HomeKitLing Siri integration I believe?
I could really use some advise on the pros/cons of these three approaches and/or clarifying my understanding of what I need to do next. Or point me to any tutorials I may have missed in my reading up on all this!
Thank you all!
Darren

Re: New plugin - ratgdo
Hi,
From my standpoint and experience, 1/ not having a ratgdo, or using the ratgdo plugin - I would suggest you install the ESPHome plugin, enter the IP address of the ESP Home device (ratgdo) and see if it works and all devices are generated. If it supports and enables the level of control you need, provided the IP address is static - it should just continue without needing anything else. It it doesn't work - disable it and nothing lost. It should need no other hardware, or software installed - simply the IP address of the ESPHome device. It automatically creates all supported devices from the ESPHome device in Indigo
Backwards from HomeKit to Indigo can be done with mirrored devices., and automation on Home App (eg. if device one turns on/off, turn on/off device 2 - with device 2 being a HKLS device). But is arguably more difficult.
Alternatively there is FlyingDiver ratgdo plugin - which you have posted here in....

Re: New plugin - ratgdo
I would also just use the ESPHome plugin if you can make it work for you. The MQTT based ratgdo plugin is much more complicated to set up. I really only wrote because I could.
I have not decided if I'm going with ratgdo or the Konnected BlaQ unit (https://konnected.io/products/smart-gar ... lternative). The Konnected unit is basically a commercial version of the ratgdo (which is all open source). It also used the ESPHome firmware.

Re: New plugin - ratgdo
Thanks for the advice. I decided to try ESPHome plugin as a first step. It does appear to connect to my ratgdo and create a variety of sensor child devices and a toggle door actuator. But it does not create the close, open, and stop commands that I was hoping for. When I turn on toggle door nothing happens and with the ratgdo web log running, I cannot see it come through. I can see the obstruction sensor change states in indigo when I put my foot in front of the sensor, so thats a start. The indigo logs also show this issue:

Part of that is good and part bad...
What version of the plugin are you using - that code line does not exist in version 0.1.7 ?
There is version 0.1.7 = which was a version for ratgdo support.
Download here:
https://github.com/Ghawken/ESPHome_Indi ... n/releases
It is likely we never completed testing it (hard as I do not have a ratgdo device and couldn't flash one) User in question perhaps disappeared
It has these changes.
Code: Select all
0.1.7
Extend Ratgdo support to Cover type (add Cover type as a Dimmer Indigo type)
Allows Door position to be set and hopefully read.
Open/Close here sets position to 0 or 100%
Add Action group for STOP command
Fix for nan start error if sensor value not set
0.1.6
Add support for Ratgdo Devices directly via IP address
Add NumberInfo info boxes
Support Buttons (needed for Ratgdo), Button is a mometary switch eg. On temporarily onlyWould try again with this version and report back - I can update as needed, and/or release if all is good.
Thanks
Glenn
Re: New plugin - ratgdo
ah, great Glenn, I downloaded 0.1.7 and that prior error is now gone and I see these additional child devices, which looks like the complete set to me:
The door command on/off is now working, but setting brightness does not stop the door at the correct position. I think there is a scaling factor issue with the brightness state. My guess is that ratgdo is sending in the range [0,1] because once completely open brightness is displayed as 1.
One additional thing I'm noticing is that the Obstruction child sensor device (which is the light eye at the garage door) updates state in less than 1 sec, which is great, but the vehicle distance sensor device seems to update only about once per minute regardless of if its value is changing or not. In the ratgdo log this value changes multiple times per second. Maybe this is just the ratgdo firmware not publishing very frequently?

Okay. I can have look at those. Good you found the github - as will be updating there
Brightness - can trial the 0 - 1 and see if helps.
The update though should be as regularly as the esp device itself (well at least the state).
Might need a big log from you with all options, including ESPHome library and a few of these errors to track them all done.
(would turn on all debug options, run through a few checks issues, zip it and PM me?)
Thanks
New plugin - ratgdo
Try Commit 0.1.8
There now - taking opportunity to upgrade library to latest (which had a few breaking changes - believe have fixed)
Fixes some of the brightness based data.
The library update may help update frequency.
Go here:
https://github.com/Ghawken/ESPHome_IndigoPlugin
Press Geen <> Code Button - Download Zip, double click downloaded file to update plugin.
Easier than release particularly if multiple changes needed.
Unfortunately thought without logging as above post, or a device - this may need to be trial and error for a bit…

Re: ratgdo with ESPHome
With commit 0.1.8 and all logging turned on, I still see the same issues with low update frequency and door brightness state. Here is a log of just observing. It seems like ratgdo is just not publishing very fast I guess?
And here is a log after turning the door on. I think the scaling error remains. Ratgdo is sending in the range [0-1]:

Hi
Hopefully will have time to look at this shortly
Can see (at least) one bug
But I do need the full file log with everything on (although having the debug logging on here helps a bit) to get to grips with what is going on. Zip and PM would be ideal
Edit:
Although can confirm one bug (which is an old one..)
& yes - the scaling is not happening as this is occurring elsewhere in the code to where I thought it was…
I think I have fixed the scaling so can select a door position, rather than this incoming update…
Leave it with me for a couple of hours…
Thanks

Re: ratgdo with ESPHome
Try version 0.1.9 there now (Commit is - can review commit messaging - but again use the code button, Download Code as above)
Still seems a exception in your logging - not sure why, this fixes the error so should show why if it still exits..

Okay - not sure whether speaking to myself but try...
0.1.10
Commited now, release and in plugin store.
Fix for async library changes for commands
Further updates for Ratgdo support
I found a ESP32 and flashed Ratgdo security version 2 I think - so have been able to test some aspects.

Re: ratgdo with ESPHome
Thanks for this Glenn,
I'll give it a shot when I get home, Ive been using Joes MQTT and the ratgdo plugin since he published it.

(Thats a Thumbs Up Emoji - if doesn’t make it intact posting…)
Let me know - thanks.
Seems to be fine on my testing…. and simply needs the IP address to setup as uses the ESPHOME Api and protobuf communication
