Error code 5 is an authentication error, I believe. So the username/password aren't matching. I think.

AND.. for the record… I downloaded “EasyMQTT” and can’t get it to connect either… so at least I’ve got a place to start!

Yeah, you've got some sort of configuration error going on. Once you get it working with an app client, getting the connector plugin to work should be straightforward.

So this took some work. For the record, I could never use Linux or any other versions, much less anything PI related for regular computer work. No doubt they are all very powerful platforms in the hands of those who know how to to use them. I am NOT one of those people. Arcane file names, too much CLI to manage, to many files to manually edit…. just too far beyond me. And while I’m pretty fearless about tinkering, I always find most set of instructions missing a step, or assuming I know something that I don’t know.

Turns out, the tutorial i was using didn’t include the method for setting up an MQTT username, but another tutorial did, which is odd because I’ve never edited or updated the config files on the Pi.

Anyway, things are back to normal. Thanks!
