I think your router or ISP is blocking the traffic. What server and port are you trying to connect to?

also tried StartTLS port 587

I am pretty sure those are correct for gmail?

What server name? Can you ping that name (in Terminal)?

You mean it's NOW working after doing the ping? That first ping took almost 10 sec. I think your nameserver had an outage.
