Or very similar. But I'm not getting this on any test setups I've used, so it must be specific to a particular auth method variant or server.

Syntax is %%v:XXXX%% to substitute in the value of a variable, or %%d:XXX:stateName%% for a state value of a device.

For instance, if I wanted to insert the temperature from one of my Ecobee thermostat sensors into a message, the syntax would be %%d:1352634209:temperature%%. The number is the Indigo DeviceID for the sensor, and "temperature" is the device state name.

Thanks for confirming that change works. I'm going to hold off on a public release until the end of the week in case I get any other bug reports.
