An officially supported 3rd Party developer could make sense.
For this to be a realistic proposition, it would require some standards/guidelines to be defined for coding/documentation so that if a 3rd party plugin had to move to fully official support as the "developer had fell of the face of the earth" it would make the process smoother than it might otherwise be.
