How To: WUnderground Temperature Settings

There are several settings that affect how the WUnderground Plugin displays temperature data within Indigo. These settings are summarized in WUnderground Plugin Installation and Use. The purpose of this post is to provide a more in depth description of how these settings affect the way data is presented, and how the settings may interact with each other. There are settings that affect all WUnderground devices in the same way, and there are settings which are device-specific.

Settings that affect all WUnderground weather devices in Indigo in the same way: These plugin settings control how Indigo will display certain WUnderground temperatures for all the devices that you create. 'Item List' refers to the main Indigo listing of devices. 'UI Value' refers to how Indigo will display these values on control pages, etc. Neither of these settings affects the actual data downloads or the values that are stored within the plugin itself. These settings merely affect the way that this data is displayed.

An 'Item List' setting of '1 decimal place' will display temperatures within the main listing of devices with 1 decimal level of precision. A setting of 0 decimal places would display as (71 °F, 43 °F, 38 °F) respectively. The plugin doesn't round the value to the nearest whole value. All the WUnderground devices that you have created will be displayed in this way.

Similarly, the 'UI Value' setting controls how temperature values are displayed elsewhere within Indigo. This setting also affects all WUnderground weather devices that you create.

These settings function independently of each other so that you can have more or less precision in one part of Indigo over another. In other words, display to 1 decimal point in the Item List and zero decimal points within Control Pages. An important thing to note here is that these settings do not affect the forecast temperatures, as Weather Underground does not provide forecasts with this level of precision.

Settings that affect each WUnderground weather device individually: In addition to the plugin level settings which affect all WUnderground devices in the same way, there are additional settings which affect each device independently of the other devices. For example, the ability to display one location with Metric values and another with Imperial values at the same time.

Weather Units / Standard or Metric: The plugin allows you to display temperatures in either Fahrenheit or Celsius (in combination with speeds and distances). There are three options: Standard/Metric/Mixed. Standard provides Imperial units for all measures (temperature, speed and distance), Metric provides metric units for all measures, and Mixed provides Metric units for temperature and Imperial units for speed and distance. This setting controls which units are stored within Indigo for the device. For example, if Standard is selected, the plugin will store all Imperial measures, but not the Metric measures.

Weather Units / Item List Display: The plugin also allows you control over which temperatures are displayed within the main Indigo device listing. In addition to displaying in Fahrenheit or Celsius, you can display both simultaneously (or none at all). The dropdown list provides an example of how each option will display. Note: it is possible to have the device set as a Standard device and still display Celsius temperatures within the main Item List. In other words, the plugin will still be storing Fahrenheit values while displaying Celsius in the Main Item List.

Display Units:The values entered here affect how Indigo will display values in locations OTHER THAN the item list display. These are string values (spaces and Unicode characters should all be okay.) In other words, you can enter just about anything that you want in these fields. Note: the WUnderground plugin doesn't evaluate these entries in any way so it's possible to have Fahrenheit devices and enter °C here--which could result in a display of 100.0 °C for example.
