Replace INSTEON device with z-Wave device

Post by norcoscia »

Is it possible to swap in a Z-Wave open / close sensor to replace an open / close INSTEON sensor and have everything automatically move over to the new device (stuff on control pages, triggers and schedules etc.)

I looked at the docs and could find a process to replace a failed z wave device with another z-wave device but could not find anything about swapping an INSTEON device with a z-wave device - if docs exist for that process could someone point me to them (assuming it is possible). Thanks…

In general, it should just work. You'll want to just edit the existing device type to Z-Wave then include/re-sync it all within the context of the old device. For most Z-Wave open/close sensors the first device Indigo creates should be the open/close sensor and it'll just be a normal on/off binary state sensor like the Insteon version. It might also create some additional devices as well (if for example it has a temperature sensor). Problems arise if one is trying to replace 1 complex module (say a multi-sensor that supports Motion + Temperature + Humidity + LUX) with another multi-sensor that doesn't support the same number of sensors or they are inserted in a different order into Indigo's device group.

All that said, it wouldn't hurt to make a backup of your Indigo Database file just in case things do "line up" correctly and your existing Triggers, Schedules, Control Pages point to the wrong device. If that is the case you'll probably end up just having to manually fix them, but it never hurts to have an old copy of the Database file in case you want to revert.

I just wanted to say that this works perfectly, completely seamless, and it's just one more of the many incredibly awesome things about Indigo that I've enjoyed for so many years, and wanted to take a few minutes to share what we all take for granted.

I'm replacing my dead/capacitor-blinking Insteon switches with Z-Wave switches because unfortunately the great new Insteon guys aren't making new ToggleLincs, only Decora-style switches, and just they're not my style. But what about all the programming and tuning I've done with Indigo, am I going to have to painstakingly recreate everything with a new Z-Wave device? Nope, just edit the existing device, change it from Insteon to Z-Wave, and all done.

But wait, there's a hitch: the new Z-Wave Dimmers dim a little differently than the original Insteon ones, so I have to hunt down and adjust the percentages everywhere, right? Nope, just right-click the device, go to Dependencies, double-click the ones that set it to the old dim percentage, edit it in place to the new percentage, all done again.

I'm a developer myself, and Indigo is just the most elegant, well-designed piece of software I've ever used. Even a feature that I didn't need for 20 years is sitting there just waiting for when I needed it. It's a joy to use, a pleasure to program, has a zillion fantastic features, plugin expansion, and just works reliably all the time.

Indigo Domotics, thanks for creating and maintaining such truly great software, especially on macOS, saving us from horrible Windows-based junk. limited appliances, and weird inelegant open-source UIs. I'm happy to support the software with my subscription and enjoy what it's done for my home automation for all these years, and what it will do in the future!
