MunDMC’s Magic Mirror + Indigo WIP

I do not know if there is a better place for WIP logs, so I find them helpful when other people do them, so I figured I would share one for my magic mirror.

Materials:
Raspberry Pi 4, power adapter, SD card, case
Old 27” monitor with HDMI
Faux reclaimed wood for aging hipsters from Home Depot
1/16” 1” square steel tubing

More to come..

Got my $129 stick welder from Amazon. The poorly translated Chinese instructions are kinda terrifying.

The unit doesn’t LOOK like a death trap. The temp gun is next to it as hot metal looks not-hot.

First weld!

Made a 45” jig for cutting the wood framing the mirror:

Two-way mirror surrounded by faux reclaimed wood. The glue didn’t take well due to some errors in my mitre calculations:

Framing the whole thing with steel tube:

I miss 2004.

So I got everything built...

Fun fact! I thought the back of the display was aluminum. Turns out, it’s mild steel, and thus... conductive.

Fried my main board with line voltage, lucky that was all i fried :o

Will return to this shortly...

I think the hoodie is a nice touch.

Looking forward to seeing it in action!

I think this meme started appearing late 1999/2000.. and I really miss those days. Everything seemed so much simpler and the future seemed more utopian.. is it just old age that’s made it seem like that or did it genuinely feel like a better time to be alive?

Also this mirror is shaping up to be awesome! Looking forward to seeing the final result!

Computer says no.

You’re right- I always make 4-year frameshift errors around 2000.
Yes- I recall my view of the future oscillating between hopeful and bleak, but I tend to only remember the optimistic parts. And simpler? Ever watch “The Broken” with Kevin Rose and his buddy?

That is pretty sick. I must admit, though, that I'm a bit more intrigued by the beer taps in the background. :D
