Yale Conexis L1 battery life issue.

Hi. Basically, the lock is working OK except for very fast battery depletion (a few weeks) in case of Z-Wave module activation.

Per Yale - it's a controller issue.

Talked with the distributor support (vesternet), very informative. The problem is well known.

...

Hi Maxim,

It might be worth asking Indigo if there's some low level debugging that you can do?

Or maybe since you mentioned that you have other Yale locks, perhaps swap the new module to one of the old locks and see if that makes a difference?

You could also try the module in a different Z-Wave controller if you have access to one and see if it behaves the same way.

Of course, there's no problem in returning the module for replacement if you believe that it's faulty, but I suspect that a replacement will behave in exactly the same way as that's been my experience so far with other customers that have had the same problem.

Hi Martyn,

First of all, thank you for the detailed description.
The controller is Indigo Domotics plus uzb1

Hi Maxim,

Yes we've had some reports of battery issues but it seems to be random and also dependant on the Z-Wave controller that you are using.

We've been in contact with Yale for the past few months over the issue but after repeated testing at low level we've not been able to highlight any specific problem on the lock or module side.

I was actually experiencing the issue myself with my own Conexis L1 with the SmartThings controller ..... the batteries would die after 2-3 days maximum. Yale insisted it was a problem with the SmartThings implementation, but SmartThings seemed to be denying any issue on their end.

I ended up modifying the SmartThings device handler to remove all unnecessary communication and add more logging but I still couldn't find anything that stood out as being the cause.

But then magically the issue went away following a SmartThings Hub update ..... the last set of batteries are still showing 100% after nearly 3 weeks. SmartThings support insist that they haven't changed anything on their end, but I suspect that they made some changes at a low level, perhaps they were inadvertently trying to set the Z-Wave module in some mode it didn't like.

Which Z-Wave controller are you using?

Hi!

The new lock is draining batteries very fast (2 weeks max) with the z-wave module (SD-M1100) installed.

Purchased from Vesternet (Order # 2052987571)

It seems like other people complaining as well, so it’s a common / massive issue.

https://www.vesternet.com/yale-smart-li ... -container
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yale-Smart-Doo ... B07965NDRN

I’ve got a few other Yale locks with z-wave and battery life is normally 1+ year.

Tried full lock reset with zero results.

Current firmware is 32.16

Could you please contact Yale (it should be easier to do as a partner / distributor) - it looks like an electronics design issue, may be the module must be replaced with a new revision?

Re: Yale Conexis L1 battery life issue.

Can you copy/paste sync log for us, so we can see what its reporting.

Might also be worth a Zwave Watcher to monitor send and receive to this device then we can see if it’s talking excessively.

Hey guys,

Has this been sorted out? I’m also planning into purchasing this lock together with Indigo but would like to make sure that it’ll run ok.

Thanks!

Re: Yale Conexis L1 battery life issue.

I haven't heard anything else.

Shapa: are you still experiencing the problem? And can you leave the Z-Wave watcher plugin on for the device for a couple day period? What you posted above just looks like a sync, and it doesn't include any timestamps so I'm not seeing anything abnormal. Would be interesting to watch it for a couple of days and see how often it communicates to Indigo (and how often Indigo communicates with it).

Re: Yale Conexis L1 battery life issue.

Hey Matt,

I just received the lock and will give this a try myself once I receive the Zwave 2 module. I have one quick question for you:

I live in the US and ordered both the lock and the zwave 2 module from the Amazon UK store since these are not sold here in the US.:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yale-Smart-Doo ... Yale+Zwave

Will the Yale Zwave 2 module work with the Aeotec Z-Stick Gen5 sold in the US store?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00X0AWA6E/re ... vBbNSF4PZN

Or will I also need to purchase the Aoetec Gen5 stick from the UK store?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/AEON-AEOEZW090 ... tick+Gen+5

I’m planning to purchase more Z-wave hardware in the future (here in the US) so I’m a bit confused right now which stick I need to get.

Thanks!

Philipp

Re: Yale Conexis L1 battery life issue.

And there is no possibility that that Z-Wave 2 module for the L1 could support the US frequency as well? If that’s the case I may have backed myself into a corner since this lock isn’t even sold in the US but it’s the only one that’ll fit my door.

I’m not sure if it’ll work but they sell a z-wave module in the US. https://www.amazon.com/Yale-Z-wave-Modu ... yale+zwave

Re: Yale Conexis L1 battery life issue.

Unfortunately, that module won’t fit the Yale Conexis. The Yale Conexis L1 requires this module:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Yale-Smart-Doo ... Yale+Zwave

And as far as I’m aware it’s only sold in the UK store. I even had to create a UK App Store account since their app is ONLY available in the iOS UK store. My only hope would be that perhaps this module could still support US frequencies?

Contact Yale and they’ll post you a ‘fixed’ module. I’ve just done it and they’re posting one out

Great find. I guess so much for it being a controller issue given the fact they are sending out new/updated modules that fix the problem!

Sign of an untrustworthy company: blame someone else rather than publicly assuming responsibility.

Add Yale to the list of companies I won't be doing business with.

Compare that to KwikSet, who replaced the battery cage of my lock when I dropped and broke it FOR FREE. It was totally my fault and I was prepared to pay, but they just sent me a new one, no questions asked.

Re: Yale Conexis L1 battery life issue.

Can’t guarantee it fixes the issues, but it’s wide spread and seems to affect other controllers.

The test would be to install the module but don’t associate it with anything for a few days.

Just got mine fitted today, excited to see what it’s capable of!

Hi All,

So I still have the issue even after the 'fixed' module. Battery has lasted about a week.

Anything I can do to help troubleshoot incase it is too much traffic causing the issue?

Re: Yale Conexis L1 battery life issue.

Bump - just changed a set of batteries again, so it's lasted almost a month on one set.

Yale say the firmware has fixed all of the reported Samsung Smartthings issues, but apparently this doesn't fix Indigo.
