piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

added "Replaceable AA Battery x 4 Waterproof IP65 Dustproof Sanwo iBeacon Altbeacon Covering a Range up to 240m (White)" to the good iBeacon list

good for Car, strong signal, lOOO day battery life

Re: piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

xy3 find it ($24, 6 for $90)
+: app to find beacon, can make it beep, good to attach to keys, ==> find keys function & plugin triggers arrive at home,
-: no option to configure power, frequency etc, on/off function, but default seem to work fine
- : creates 3 beacons with a different (but similar) MAC numbers. 2 are regular beacons (you should select one and delete the other one) the third comes one when you press the beep button. So this beacon can be used (with the beep MAC and fastDown option) to switch on/ off light when you come home in addition to the regular arrival

As I can see the range for these are not adjustable so are the range from the xy spec always 150ft and how does they do when walls between ?

piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

An American wall reduces the signal by about 20 dbm
One wall is ok , 2 will likely reduce the signal below - 90dbm

That is why I have 10 rpi

Re: piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

First of all thank you for making this very nice plugin!
Quite easy to install.
I used the etcher app for the image burn.

I have only tested with my iPhone so far and know this is not the best solution because the battery saver. so the iPhone will go down
i have tired different solutions with long time period but then it is not good for home/away.

my question is if I buy the xy find it beacons and attach them to our keys.
the keys are usually placed same place every day. within 2 meters.

is the rpi able to keep them "up" all the time with the right settings?
and what is the "right" settings for xy find it ?

beacuse thinking of arm/disarm the house with a beacon if possible.

regards Allan.

piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

The default settings should it.
( expiration time settings )
It is the same for all beacons.
I only depends on range and how many rpi you have

You can play around with settings for each ibeacon and overwrite the default

You should also look at the group feature
There you can easily combine ibeacons into groups and set triggers on all members home/ away. At least One member home/ away

Re: piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

tried TRACKR bravo beacon.

==None of the regular BLE scanners (tried 5 different) pick it up.
==pibeacon does not receive any messages

This device must be really different .

==> not usable as a beacon for pibeacon.

The TRACKR app itself works fine with the beacon, it detects the bravo, you can make it beep etc..

Re: piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

Tested iHere gen 2 beacon - $10 at amazon
works fine and has a rechargeable battery (micro USB) , and looks nice, but is a little thicker

Mine has the following properties, other iHere likely similar
mac# =24:DA:11:21:2B:20
uuid = 005b0200239be11102d1001c00000319-2-522

To accept/ add the beacon: put beacon on top of RPI, set in config: accept new beacon signal > -70 dBm -or higher if the beacon emits strong signals.
Then you should only get very few new junk beacons AND the new iHere beacon.
This method should work for all beacons

Re: piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

Has anyone noticed that the two non-button beacons that the XY3 creates have different power transmit levels? When using Karl's cool plotting feature I notices some strange behaviors on a couple of my XY3's. Some seemed to work much better than others. In trying to diagnose it I turned on the plotting for both available beacons on each XY3. As an example for my red XY3 I named the two beacons Red-1 and Red-2. On the plot the Red-1 has a much smaller proportional circle than the other and the Red-1 appears to be more accurate on the plot. The Red-2 beacon showed a much larger proportional circle and seemed to hop around a lot more.

I tossed a beacon scanner on my phone and when looking at both beacons one of them reported a TX of -60 dbm and the other a TX of -49 dbm. Does anyone else with an XY3 see the same thing?

Re: piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

you can switch on mac # tracking for the different xy and see each RSSI as they come in, may be it s due to different battery levels?
ps my favorite BLE scanner today is "BLE nearby". -- very simple, reads everything shows MAC number and uuid (reverse to pibeacon or may be oiBeacon is reverse)

Re: piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

When I tested last night, I pulled the batteries out of my other XY3 (only had 2 with good batteries) so I only had the one XY3. Like you would expect, it showed two beacons but both beacons were on the plot in different locations. When using the scanner I saw the different TX levels. It is almost like the XY3 is pushing the two different beacons for different purposes? A high power and a low power? Hitting the button added the 3rd beacon on the list. It was at the higher level. If that holds true for other people using the XY3, they may want to identify which of the two beacons they want to use and which one to delete.

Could you check the uuid if they are different?

Re: piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

The uuid prefix is the same. The major is the same but the minor is different.

To verify, I have just the single XY3 here at work and ran a scanner on my phone to verify.

UUID=08885dd0111b11e491910800200c9a66 Major=9221 Minor=852 TX= -60 dBm RSSI=-77 dBm
UUID=08885dd0111b11e491910800200c9a66 Major=9221 Minor=855 TX= -49 dBm RSSI=-59 dBm

#Msgs :It looks as if the low signal (-60dbm) happens more often(1/sec) than the high signal (-49dBm; 1/4 secs) and the messages have the same std beacon package length

Will think about how to use this .. may be we can combine both signals into one device ..

nice observation ploycron!!

Re: piBeacon: 7- tested Beacons

I saw that Peeble Bee has a shipping cost of 11$ if I buy 10 of them.

Question is: which modem of Peeble Bee?
https://pebblebee.com/

Are they small enough to attach them to keys or to keep it in the pocket?

Thanks
Marco
