I would like to capture with the iTunes plugin the length of the currently selected song and the play position in the song (i.e. time elapsed). My ultimate goal is to send this to the Nuvo Grand Concerto to display this information on their keypads. It does not look like the iTunes plugin has this functionality. Can this be achieved with a script or by modifying the plugin?

That information isn't available in the plugin. You might be able to get it via AppleScript - have a look at the iTunes AS dictionary and see if it's there.
