X10 and Matter ...

What could the new Matter protocol mean for X10 users ? Is it bad or good news ?

Re: X10 and Matter ...

For X-10, no news at all. The powerline protocol used by X-10 and Insteon is not compatible with either of the communications layers supported by Matter (Wifi and Thread). It's possible that the new Insteon team might design/build a new hub that acts as a Matter bridge, but they're busy just getting production running again so it won't be soon. And even then they might not support X-10.

Keep in mind, X10 is a really OLD protocol and I don't think anyone makes new X10 devices. SOME Insteon interfaces supported X10 but not all. At this point, you should really be looking at what you're going to to use to replace X10.

Re: X10 and Matter ...

I have been looking to do that for many years.

My X10 works great and without flaws. I would like to be Apple compatible but that as a cost, a big cost. For a big house like ours with ±95 different codes, if you take into consideration the changes in habits, the retrofit of all new devices/modules/ wall transmitter/etc ..., the problems and the adaptationtime required, the upgrade is not worth it.

I would love to be convinced, but no info as done that yet. Protocols changes every year and the update and none of them could promise us the long term stability that we have experienced in the last 30 years. Not upgrading as a feature cost, probably, but, for us, it's trouble free.

Those modules are going to start failing, so you need a plan to deal with that.
