seems counterintuitive

Not sure this is the right place, but couldn't figure out where was better.

From my log:

Code: Select all
Virtual Devices                 sent "Exterior Lights" on
Sent Hue Lights                 "Front Porch Lux" off at ramp rate 0.0 sec.
Sent Hue Lights                 "Patio Spot" off at ramp rate 0.0 sec.
Sent Hue Lights                 "Rear Corner Spot" off at ramp rate 0.0 sec.
Sent Hue Lights                 "Front Spot" off at ramp rate 0.0 sec.

Did I set up the virtual device wrong? How would I have done that?

Virtual devices are different than regular devices. Have a look at this documentation:
http://wiki.indigodomo.com/doku.php?id=indigo_6_documentation:virtual_devices_interface

What you might be looking to do (when I turn something on, a group of devices turn on) can be done with an Action Group. For example, some examples from my Action Groups:

"Dusk" turns on select devices when it's about 15 minutes before sunset
"Sunset" turns on several outside lights
"Bedtime" turns off all inside lights
"Sunrise" turns off all outside lights

I came here to drink milk and kick ass....and I've just finished my milk.

Is this from our varied posts on best practice?

Did you follow my post that you acknowledged as very helpful - it highlights the gotchas that everyone falls for, including you. :-)

Re: seems counterintuitive

You're right. But at that time I was on the demo, and couldn't investigate Virtual Devices because of the device limit.

So I wasn't ready to have that stuff in my head, I guess.

I get Virtuals now. They're very different from the same thing in ST, and better, but that's what threw me.

All in all, I can't yet describe how much better and different Indigo is from SmartThings. Last night I deleted all my SmartApps and most of my devices from ST. It was really cathartic!
