Can a virtual device get it's setting from a value?

I have external code that updates a variable with the temperature of my hot water heater. Would it be possible to display this in devices so I can have it's temperature value on the same screen as the rest of my HVAC devices?

I don't know how to display a variable's value on the devices list, so I thought something like a virtual device would allow it's value to come from a variable, but I don't see how to do it.

The built-in Virtual Devices interface doesn't have a sensor type, but there may be a 3rd party plugin that does.

I've been looking through the plug-ins, and I don't see anything that's obvious (in the description). It's not critical, so if there's not an obvious solution I'll put it on my long ToDo list of things to write.
