Hot water heater automation via Skycentrics CTA-2045

Hello all. I'm looking to replace my hot water heater and add some automation at the same time. The Rheem models at Home Depot have horrible reviews. I'm looking at an A.O. Smith brand at Lowes, which claims to be "smart capable". The fine print doesn't detail that you need to buy a $220 "Smart Port Adaptor" (CTA-2045) from SkyCentrics.com. I haven't been able to locate much information on this module. It appears to be Wi-Fi only and controlled with the SkyCentrics mobile app. That app has nearly no information in the app store.

Anyone have an opinion or suggestion for this topic?

Thanks!

I have no experience with the SkyCentric stuff, but I have owned A.O. Smith water heaters and never had any trouble with them.

I came here to drink milk and kick ass....and I've just finished my milk.

Re: Hot water heater automation via Skycentrics CTA-2045

SkyCentrics makes CTA-2045 Wi-Fi and soon cellular modules. These can go into water heaters from Rheem and AO Smith and soon many others (because of a WA and OR state law that requires all water heaters sold in those states to have an ECOPORT). Our ECOPORT modules also go into Mistubishi Mini-Splits, Pentair Pool Pumps, Siemens EV chargers (Versicharge), IslandAire PTACs, and then many commercial systems will soon be released starting with the Mitsubishi Commercial Heat Pump compressor for large commercial buildings, which I imagine is less interesting to this forum.
There will soon be the list of ECOPORT approved products and modules at this URL http://ecoport.openadr.org/, which I imagine will be interesting.
While you can schedule any of the above machines/appliances through our web and mobile apps, I believe the forum is most interested in our REST API. This API has largely been used by our utility customers to send 'grid signals' to shed (use less energy) or load up (use more energy), and we have not automated our API key delivery process, therefore it would take us too long to manually make API keys for individuals, but we believe there is interest in the growing ECOPORT appliances and having access through our API for individual homeowners and we will be releasing an API management system later this year for just that reason.
