LampLinc doesn't turn all the way off

I noticed this around Christmas time with a LampLinc controlling strings of mini-LED light strings, and now again with a different LampLinc and different strings of mini-LEDs.

When the LampLinc is all the way off (dimmed), the LEDs are still slightly on (very dim). I thought this might be related to Load Sense, but unfortunately Indigo seems to only control Load Sense for OutletLincs (hint! hint!). But then I found how to turn off Load Sense manually in the LampLinc's manual, but that didn't seem to solve this issue. (Go in to linking mode then double-tap button.)

So either this is something else, or I didn't correctly disable Load Sense. So...

Is there a Raw Insteon Command to disable Load Sense for a LampLinc? And/or...

Is there a way to determine the state of a LampLinc's Load Sense setting?

And if it's not Load Sense, any idea why a string of mini-LEDs would still be slightly on, even when the LampLinc is off?

Ah, disabling Load Sense only stops the "on" action, not the sensing current. Brilliant Insteon... Oh well. Thanks for the quick response Jay...

By the way, in all that data from the device, is one of those items the Load Sense setting? Nothing popped out to me as such...

Re: LampLinc doesn't turn all the way off

It actually has less to do with load sensing and more to do with how the devices power themselves. They allow a tiny trickle of electricity through so that they are continuously powered (so they can respond to commands, etc). That trickle is enough to cause LEDs to glow since they require so little to work - this wasn't a problem with incandescents because they wouldn't work with so little power. In-wall devices don't have the problem because they power via the neutral wire. Newer devices handle the problem differently (though I don't know how exactly).

Thanks for the explanation, Jay. Seems it could have been a simple matter to engineer the circuitry such to completely separate the power required by the Insteon mechanism from that sent to the plugged-in device, even allowing for the Load Sense. But then, there's a lot about the Insteon protocol I would have done differently! Oh well, academic. They work the way they work...

And FWIW, I had a similar problem. Adding a small incandescent lamp to the load fixed the problem. Not a solution for everyone, but in my case, a 25w lamp fixed the issue.

Re: LampLinc doesn't turn all the way off

One way to address this issue is to add a load resistor or suppression capacitor into the circuit. These perform the same function that an incandescent bulb does. There are plug-in units and wire-in units available. I had this issue in the past and used a small dummy load which kept my LEDs from glowing.

I came here to drink milk and kick ass....and I've just finished my milk.

You have same issue with zwave dimmer when no neutral wire, and as per Dave's comment, they also need a dummy load on them.
