RFXCOM and Z-stick using the same resource?

Hi all,

I recently upgraded Indigo to 7.3 on my Mac Mini. Upon upgrade I found that although Z-wave was green and W800RF2 was red and struck through at the bottom left of the Indigo window, everything functioned fine... for a time.

After about a month, the Lightwaverf kit (switches and dimmers) stopped working. I'd get error messages relating to errno 16 and that the serial port might be in use by another device.

I tried swapping USB ports etc - same issue. I upgraded to the latest version of Indigo, 7.3.1. Once I brought the app back up, I noticed that the device assignment had changed, so I set it to usbmodem1441, suddenly the Lightwaverf kit worked again, however W800RF32 was still red.

Out of curiosity I set the serial port to usbserial-A1XEWQ31, and the red turned to green - however the Lightwaverf kit stopped working, so I set it back to usbmodem1441.

However - no sooner did I do that then did the Zwave kit stop working. It is also now using usbmodem1441.

I can't recall what it was using prior to this - I had set it all up several years ago and everything just worked.

The only other entry is HKAuraBT-SPPDev, and that doesn't appear to work with anything.

Question is - how can I get my RFXCOM and Z-stick to work happily together on the same Mac Mini? It is a late 2012 model running MacOS Sierra.

Re: RFXCOM and Z-stick using the same resource?

It sounds like you're using the Gen5 Z-Stick - which uses Apple's built-in modem driver, so the correct port for that will always start with usbmodem followed by a number. Note: the number part will change if you move it to a different USB port, so if you move it to a different port (even if it's on the same hub) you'll need to select the new port.

The RFXCOM uses the FTDI driver, so the correct port for that will always start with "usbserial-" followed by letters and numbers. That won't change unless you replace the RFXCOM (it's based on the serial number of the device itself).

Assuming you have it configured as above, both should work without issue. If not, then we'll need more specific information about which one isn't working and the exact errors you're seeing in the Event Log.

Re: RFXCOM and Z-stick using the same resource?

Hi,

I'm puzzled by the behaviour of the Z-stick and the RFXCOM. I just set them to what they're supposed to be - and I don't get any errors when executing commands via either interface, however only the Z-stick seems to work.

Here are a few lines from the event log:

Re: RFXCOM and Z-stick using the same resource?

Choose the Indigo->Preferences menu item. Does it show the X10 RF Interface item enabled in the table? If so, disable it. It looks like you are using the RFXCOM, which doesn't use Indigo's built-in W800RF library but instead uses this 3rd party plugin. Configuring of that plugin is done via the Plugins menu. If you also had Indigo's X10 RF Interface enabled (in Indigo's Preferences dialog) then they would both be trying to grab/use the same serial port for the interface, which would cause problems.

Amazing - doh - can't believe I had that interface enabled and didn't need it, no idea how that happened.

Thanks for the help, that appears to have fixed it!
