Losing communications to the server

I wanted to upgrade my home install - its my 3rd indigo house so not a total noob (just a partial noob).
Bought brand new Mac mini - installed indigo and placed a very basic database of a couple of switches. Now (after a few weeks away) indigo is very unstable often taking 30-60 seconds to respond to a click - beachball of death spinning. Sometimes it get the message "cannot communicate with the server......." server is running in activity monitor and using very little cpu. I have same problem if using demo database from indigo. I have done 2 clean instals - problem unchanged. Stop server command and any server interaction does apparently nothing.
Anyone got any suggestions on what is causing this? Mac mini appears to be working OK.
