What causes something like this?

Hi Guys,

ever since I finally updated to 7.1.1 I find the Indigo server more unreliable from day to day.
Today I suddenly found out, that many of my device were disabled for no apearant reason.
Consulting the log window I found this:

I have never experienced somthing like this before and I really am confused why this could be happening to a machine that ran stable for some years now.
Does anyone have had a similar problem?
What might be going on?

Any input welcome!
Cheers
Wilhelm

Re: What causes something like this?

I don't know specifically what caused it, but your Z-Wave controller got into a bad state. It stopped replying to Indigo for a while, then once Indigo finally was able to reconnect to it it gave Indigo incorrect information about the modules it has included in it, which caused Indigo to disable those devices. Indigo did that because as far as it was concerned none of the included devices match anymore.

Re: What causes something like this?

Sorry I didn't see that thread.
To give you some more information, I am using an Gen5 Stick on Indigo 7.1.1 with Mavericks 10.9.5, which doesn't get any updates any more. So I am pretty sure, the OS is not the problem.

What I dids recenttly is instaling some plugins, namely ZEAL, ZWave Node Matrix and updated GhostXML to the most recent version.
I don't know if any on them could freeze the usb port or the z-wave stick.

Cheers

Neither the Wave Node Matrix nor GhostXML plugins have anything to do with the Z-Wave stack or the stick. The ZWNM plugin uses data from the Indigo database; it doesn't access the stick directly..

Hi Dave,

I didn't want to imply that your plugins did, but thanks for the confirmation.
For me it's more likely it has something to do with Indigo 7.1.1 because that was the most obvious change.
Nevertheless I wanted to list everything I changed before the problem first manifested itsself.

For comparison, I am on 7.1.1, Sierra 10.12.6 and I have had Zeal and Node Matrix loaded but neither at the time this happened, both are now removed and never installed ghostXML.
You also have the EU/UK stick, something that was common amongst those having the problem.

I think my problem was the detached garage was too far from the house so it was marginal signal, I could almost guarantee setting off an Optimize would cause the Gen5 to crash.

I put a Fibaro Dimmer Switch (FGD212) as repeaters in the house loft (single storey) and the garage eaves so they could "see" each other, since then I have not had the problem but I still have a trigger set for an interface connection failure thanks to a bit of code from ldurz https://forums.indigodomo.com/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=19916&start=30#p163225

Like you, I never had the issue with version 6.

I also didn't have any issues with 7.1

About the optimize you maybe right. That Is something I used recently.

BTW I find that the Aeotec is still on version 3.95.
I ordered an UZB1 last week which has the same chipset but the firmware is 4.61

Since the replacement of a Z-Wave stick is so much work, I didn't try the UZB yet. Unfortunately the Memory-Dumps of Aeotec and UZB now are incompatible, So it's no use trying to transfer the backup.

No, no -- it's fine. Just trying to help you eliminate those as potential causes.

Sorry I just realized my version went from 7.0.3. to 7.1.1
I never used 7.1

So the statement should really be I also didn't have any issues with 7.0.3 and before

Re: What causes something like this?

The problem isn't related to Indigo v7.1 changes. It is a Z-Wave controller problem – it is locking up and then returning bad data to Indigo. We are going to try to make Indigo more tolerant when this occurs, but it is definitely not an Indigo bug that is causing the problem.

Re: What causes something like this?

I understand that, Matt,

but as this only recently appeared after updateting to 7.1.1 with a hardware and software that basically didn't change (apart form the ZWave + chipset) it could be that Indigo is sending something that causes the stick to freeze.
I know it's a long shot, but there are not so much more varaibles that have changed.
And this phenomenon hasn't been there as long as I am using Indigo.

In your instance, yes. But we have reports of the problem occurring well before 7.1. My guess is it has to do with your network congestion/routes, and at some point the Z-Stick gets into a bad state because of Z-Wave commands it is receiving or because of Z-Wave commands it is trying to send. But I'm 98% sure it is occurring at the Z-Wave communication stack layer, and not at the controller/host communication layer.

Re: What causes something like this?

Hi Matt,

if this is the case it narrows it down to the Zwave+ side of things - or as CliveS pointed out the "optimize network" function, which I only recently used .
Would be interresting if its a bug in the zwave+ firmware.
UZB1 updated it several times, Aeotec did not.
Cheers

Re: What causes something like this?

I have a neigbour who is also using Indigo and the Aeotec Gen5 stick and he had a similar problem a week ago.
Unfortunately he is on holiday at the moment, but when he comes back I'l try to find out the circumstances.
