What causes something like this?

I'll add a data point to the discussion about z-wave devices having their communications disabled. I originally had a schedule set to optimize my ~40 z-wave devices about once a day. No particular reason for doing that. On advice of another forum member I disabled that schedule. Since then (about a week ago), no further issues.

It happened again.

I am sorry, I am using this system for nearly 4 years now. Without any problems on the zwave side at all.
And after updating to 7.1.1 it fails twice in one week? I don#t think this is conincidence.
I doubt that the "optimize network" that I used before the first incident has any effect after more than a week.

Matt, I really think, you are investigateing in the wrong direction.
The only device that I changed in the last weeks, was the fibaro Window sensor because of which I had to upgarde to 7.1.1

I really hope there will be a solution soon, because as it is now, I have absolutely now confidence in my HA system any more.

After that, I re-enabled all disabled devices by hand and the system is running again.

I'm not extremely knowledgeable on the system logs, but I wonder if someone knows if there is a way to filter the messages down to try and view USB errors? Maybe if it is locking up there is some clue in there?

Just a musing in case someone can jump in; I can usually find what I am looking for in the logs, but I muddle through it and not enough to be able to suggest / tell someone how to look for it.

I am sorry, I am using this system for nearly 4 years now. Without any problems on the zwave side at all.
And after updating to 7.1.1 it fails twice in one week? I don#t think this is conincidence.

Correlation is not causation. Just because the problem started about the time you went to 7.1.1 doesn't mean that 7.1.1 caused it. It could be a hardware failure. Coincidences do happen.

Downgrade to 7.1.0 for a while and see if the problem comes up again.

That might look that way. but theses are software generated keypad errors because I mistyped the the pin intentioally. i did that many times before to test something.

This is discussed on that other forum thread. As we've said multiple times we are looking at making Indigo more robust in handling the problem. What happens is the Z-Wave controller gets in a bad state, it then tells Indigo that all of modules included in the controller are very different than what they are, Indigo disables all of its devices because they no longer match (it is the same thing that would happen if you plugged in a Z-Wave Controller from a neighbor's house that had totally different devices included in it). We are looking into making Indigo more robust in handling the bad data, either by automatically re-enabling the devices at some point or by not immediately disabling the devices but somehow trying to further detect if the Z-Wave is going to recover. It is very much the traditional garbage-in (from Z-Wave Controller), garbage-out problem. We'll try to make Indigo better at detecting garbage, but it isn't a simple problem.

Edit: Or are you talking about re-installing the older version of Indigo? Have you downloaded and run the installer? What problem(s) are you having?

Yes, I would first make a backup of the Indigo folder (in case something goes wrong), then copy over the old backup folder you have, and finally re-run the Indigo 7.0.3 installer.

Just an observation but everyone that has mentioned this problem are in the EU/UK (don't mention Brexit!!!) and that means we use 868.4MHz were the US use 908.4MHz and Australia/NZ use 921.4MHz.

Could it be that the European 4G phone masts, which are multiplying rapidly, are just swamping the Z- Wave frequency with noise that when it gets busy (like optimising) the Z Stick just gets so much garbage it gives up. A bit like trying to talk to someone at a party when the Stereo is full blast.

I think that was my problem and by adding a few more " repeaters" it reduced the distance between modules and allowed the signal to get through and I have not had the problem since (famous last words!)

Any low power radio devices operating in the range 862 MHz to 870 MHz are most likely to be affected by interference from the portable devices using the 800 MHz LTE system since they will be transmitting in the upper part of the 790 MHz to 862 MHz band, i.e. the part of the band which is closest to the frequencies used by Low Power Radio Devices.
