cannot sync/set up DIN Rail Dimmer 2452-222

(Tried to post in supported hardware area but unable to create a new topic. Also, this hardware is not listed there.)

I'm running Indigo 7.4.1 (Pro). I have two brand new DIN Rail Dimmers (2452-222). They appear to be supported since v6 (http://www.indigodomo.com/devices/67) and yet I am unable to sync (set up) either.

Things I've tried:
  • They power on (both units).
  • Pressing the mechanical paddle on the device controls the load (both units).
  • I can see the LED blink green when Indigo is trying to sync, but the sync fails (both units).
  • I tried doing a factory reset and still no luck (both units).
  • I tried multiple outlets around my house, both supply legs, and right next to the Insteon modem, and still no luck.

I've included some log output (from two attempts in a row) below.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

The device isn’t responding to the PowerLinc request for device information. It could be signal noise that’s keeping them from communicating. You can also try factory resetting them.

Re: cannot sync/set up DIN Rail Dimmer 2452-222

Thanks Jay. I tried factory resets on both. It could be noise but I tried various locations around my house with no luck, and at this time I’m not aware of other noise issues. I was able to sync/set up micro dimmers in the locations.

Re: cannot sync/set up DIN Rail Dimmer 2452-222

And every time you saw this error:

Code: Select all
Error Linking - device failed to send engine version information

This means that the PowerLinc asked the device for it's version information and it never replied. This normally indicates signal issues, a device that's gotten corrupt (a factory reset should solve this), or that it's failing. If there are 2 doing this, then it seems unlikely that both are failing, so that's why I said signal issues. If you've tried using a long extension cord to run from a different room to the PowerLinc and that didn't work and you've tried syncing them on the same circuit as the PowerLinc and that failed as well, then really the only other thing I can think of is to factory reset your PowerLinc just to see if it's gotten into some odd state (you'll need to have all battery powered devices at hand so you can resync all insteon links when you've completed the factory reset).

If that doesn't work and you've tried all of the things in the signal troubleshooting guide, then I'm out of ideas. You can contact Smarthome and see if they'll replace one of them to see if maybe they came from a batch that has a bad firmware flash.

You should feel free to always ask questions and we'll do our best to understand the problem and offer solutions. This one is pretty baffling.

Re: cannot sync/set up DIN Rail Dimmer 2452-222

Thanks Jay. I try to only post questions after due diligence of testing, research, etc. I was aware of the signal troubleshooting guide, from previous issues, which is why I mentioned that I had tried multiple outlets around my house, etc. I have bridged power legs, signal linc units, etc. I wish there was a useful signal analyzer available somewhere, but such is life. I'll keep trying different locations.

Incidentally, the DIN rail dimmers were not my first choice. I had originally intended to use in-line dimmers but alas, they are not to be found these days. (I'm having trouble finding those, outlet dimmers, and some other things.)

Thanks again.

Have you checked the Smarthome website? I think they have micro dimmers available for order but no idea how long it will take to get them.

Also, have you considered Z-Wave? There is a lot more variety from a wide range of vendors.

Re: cannot sync/set up DIN Rail Dimmer 2452-222

Hi Jay. Thanks for the ideas. Smarthome does have the micro controllers—I have some on order. I might end up using those with normal outlets for my “outlet dimmer” needs. Should be fine. I am using lots of z-wave these days, eg all of my door open-close sensors, water leak sensors, some I/O units, and some other things. I’ve experimented with z-wave dimmers but I’m unable to make them as responsive in groups with Insteon devices (joint Insteon + Z-wave dimming for example) compared to Insteon linking between Insteon devices. So I could make a mix work, but I’m hoping to remain “all Insteon” for this immediate project. Thanks again!

This is what I miss about Insteon, but other then that everything else works better for me with z-wave. Also, I found, that if I don't mix Insteon with z-wave in scenes the z-wave devices respond very close together. Not instantaneous as Insteon scene, but close.

I thought that z-wave has scenes like Insteon, but Indigo doesn't support them. I'm not sure if they are similar as inteon where scenes work between devices without the commands having to be send multiple times. If its possible to send a scene brotcast message to z-wave to which multiple devices respond at the same time that would remove the last advangate Insteon has in my mind. Comments from developers regarding this would be most welcome.
