Re: 2413S connection

No idea if the pin-out on the cable is correct for the 2413S - you should contact Smarthome to see if they know.

Note, however, that that cable uses the FTDI chipset - so if it's your intent to use that to get around the macOS driver issues it won't help (since it uses the same serial-to-USB chipset as the 2413U). Look for a cable/adaptor that uses a different driver, like the Silicon Labs VCP drivers, to avoid those bugs.

Re: 2413S connection

Looks like they have a macOS driver available. Listed as High Sierra (not sure what OS you're using) but I suspect it works as well on Mojave.

I have no recent experience with those so I can't really guarantee anything (many MANY years ago there were issues with that driver but those are likely solved I'd guess).

Re: 2413S connection

tripplite also has one with drivers

May be an issue for 10.13 and 10.14 however as you said

I'm just not sure about the pin-outs for those kinds of cables. Again you'll need to check with Smarthome.

Re: 2413S connection

I need some help determine how to make a ethernet cable to convert the signal to connect from a prolific usb serial cable to a 2413S or if the cable is just too long?

Prolific Serial Cable Pin Configuration
1 - Request to Sent Out
2 - Data Terminal Ready Out
3 - Tranceive data Out
4 - Ground
5 - Ground
6 - Receive Data In
7 - Data Set Ready In
8 - Clear to Send In

2413S Configuration
1 - RS232 to PC pin2 (Rx)
2 - Not Connected
3- TTL output (from PLM)
4 - Not Connected
5 - Not Connected
6 - TTL input (from PLM)
7 - Common ground
8 - RS232 from Pin 3 (Tx)

I am not sure if the cable does not work cuz it is longer than 10 ft or if I need to make a patch cable?

Re: 2413S connection

I think you want:

Cable PIN 3 -> 2413S PIN 1
Cable PIN 1 -> 2413S PIN 8
Cable PIN 4 or 5 -> 2413S PIN 7

But I might have the first two reversed. That is, it might be 3 -> 8 and 1 -> 1 instead.

I'm not sure if any of the other PINs on the cable should be grounded or not.

Re: 2413S connection

I tried both configurations but I cannot find the PLM. The USB bus sees the Prolific Serial Controller but Indigo does not see the PLM 2413S. I know the PLM works cuz I used a keys-Dan connector and that worked, I am just trying to get it o work with the USB-RJ45 serial cable instead. I made a patch cable and tested the patch cable with a tester to make sure the pins ere correct.

Any other suggestions from anyone?

Can you describe more about what's happening here?

Re: 2413S connection

I can see the USB to RJ45 cable listed under system report - usb devices but I cannot detect the PLM (2413S) - i.e. no seria port linterface option listed under the configuration option for Insteon interface in Indigo. Yes, I have installed the Prolific drivers.

When I connect the PLM thru a key span adapter instead I can see a serial port configuration option for "usbserial" and the PLM is detected by Indigo

Re: 2413S connection

The serial port should be shown whenever the adapter is plugged into the Mac, regardless of what is connected on the other side of the adapter (2413S in this case). That is, how the cable is wired won't impact if the serial port is being shown/created by the driver. It sounds like the driver isn't working correctly with your OS version, unfortunately.

Re: 2413S connection

I think it is finding the prolific drivers cuz when I have the cable unplugged completely it reads usbserial - port not found

When I have the prolific usb-serial cable plugged it it finds the port and reads usbserial. (see first image)

The issue is that Indigo does not find the PLM - see second image below

No, Indigo just remembers the last port that was selected. What that means is that there is no longer a "usbserial" port, which means the driver didn't create it.

When "usbserial" is showing, then there is a serial port in the /dev/ directory (where all serial ports are, and where the prolific driver is putting it when it finds a prolific device on the USB bus). What you're saying is that even in this case you're getting errors in the event log showing communication failures? What are the exact errors that it shows when it tries to connect?
