3d Printers - Possible source of interference.

Jay, and Matt,

I had difficulty locating a good place for this, so please feel free to relocate it as needed.

Folks,

With 3d Printers becoming more popular, I just picked one up, and it has been a home automation nightmare.

1) I didn't realize that it was what was causing the failures, the symptoms where of a 2413U failure. Still, I can't prove it isn't a failing 2413U, but I can prove the 3d printer is killing Insteon powerline signals.
2) I had recently picked up 3 filterlincs, and as soon as I realized what was happening, I moved one over to the 3d printers. No change. Tried another filterlinc, and success.

And here's the bigger problem. When printing, the filterlinc is not able to block 100% of the interference.

Is there something more effective than a filterlinc?

Please keep this in mind, when troubleshooting any issues.

(Oh and by the way, the failure of the first filterlinc, actually was complete. No power passing through it to our *REFRIDGERATOR*. Thankfully nothing was lost, but be careful with filterlincs. )

Re: 3d Printers - Possible source of interference.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm about to install some stuff at my Nephew's new home and he has a one. Just ordered a FilterLinc and hopefully that'll take care of it. May I ask the make/model of 3D Printer you have?

I don't know specifically of anything better than a FilterLinc, but this guy makes some custom hardware that includes filters for X10. I don't know if they work for Insteon or how well, but it might be worth an email to him.

Well, the printer line is actually a well-respected manufacturer, to my knowledge. It's AnyCubic, and I have the AnyCubic Kossel Linear Pully.

Overall, it just looks like either I may have a questionable power supply, or they use lower end power supplies. I may just swap the power supply out, and replace it with a different one.

But because I thought everything was melting down here, I upgraded my 2313U with a newer model, picked up some 2635-222's, and both of those made a significant difference in the reliability of the network. I still have to figure out where I am going to put the other 2x 2635's. (And I was able to reposition the Accesspoints close to the circuit breakers....)

Next up, the complete destruction and rebuild of my iMac. (It's been very flakey over the last month or two, it's time for a complete clean re-install of the OS. This machine has *never* had a clean re-install, it's always been upgraded. Hopefully, that will resolve the last few niggly Indigo issues that I am seeing.)

Okay....

A $4 Ferrite Core did just as much as a $50 Filterlinc.

Technically it's a 2 pack for $9.xx, but you get the point.

And it's a heck of a lot more reliable, considering I've purchased 4 in the last 2 months, and only 1 of them has been good.

That being said, I'm going to still plug this into the Tripplite Isoltel, since there is more than one item being powered up...

Has anyone done an autopsy on a Filterlinc? I'm curious to see what the heck is in one, when a ferrite core does (seemingly) the same job.
