Re: Insteon 2413U occasionally disappears

It does look as though the 2413U powerLinc is malfunctioning. I tried to get the green light to come on for an hour (attempting a hard reset many times). Then i just left it plugged in...1 hour later the green light lit up, seemingly out of the blue.

I also was able to hotplug other usb devices into any of the 4 mac mini ports with good results, as long as the device wasn’t the PowerLinc.

New Insteon 2448A7 dongle arrives tomorrow.

By the way...smarthome is dumping the Insteon 2448A7’s right now for $19.00. Ouch. I’m going to buy a spare. I paid amazon $59 for the one coming tomorrow.

Re: Insteon 2413U occasionally disappears

Since upgrading my MacMini to High Sierra, I am now having the exact same issue with the PowerLinc.

2017-10-01 23:22:05.538 Error PowerLinc not responding -- attempting reset
2017-10-01 23:22:05.793 Power Failure possible power failure
2017-10-01 23:22:09.225 Interface Failure lost connection with interface

I have to unplug and replug the PowerLinc to fix the issue...

Either the HW is dying, and the fact that it just started is a coincidence, or a combination of HS, the serial driver, and Indigo is locking up the PowerlInc...

Re: Insteon 2413U occasionally disappears

It's appearing more and more like it's a macOS High Sierra bug of some type.

Indigo isn't doing anything different on High Sierra than it was under Sierra or any other OS version. Since we haven't changed anything (and it's working fine for others including us in our testing), it stands to reason that the OS is doing something different.

Does anyone who's experiencing this issue have an RFXtrx(rec)433 or a serial to USB cable that uses the FTDI driver as well? Since they use the same driver that the PowerLinc uses and I'm wondering if you're having the same kind of connection issue. Don't upgrade to find out please - we don't want to you be out of commission, but if you've already upgraded and you're having PowerLinc issues the let us know about any other device that uses the FTDI driver.

One more thing for those of you having issues to try. Open a terminal window and type in the following command:

Code: Select all
ls -lda /System/Library/Extensions/*FTDI*

copy/paste the results in a reply.

Re: Insteon 2413U occasionally disappears

Right now, the modem is behaving (not unusual to go from 1 day to many days in between). I assume you want this line typed once the modem vanishes. It could be a up to a couple weeks. I do have the new wireless only 2448A7 modem to install, but thats going to take me some time to reassociate all my devices so I haven’t done it yet.

I’m pretty sure that my ailing 2413U must be removed completely when I do finally install the 2448A7.

I’ll see if I can wait long enough for one more 2413U failure so i can execute the terminal window line you’re referencing.

No - try it now.

Though, I was really talking to @asw24b since he's upgraded to High Sierra... ;)

Re: Insteon 2413U occasionally disappears

My mac mini is rather ‘newish’ bought about 3 or 4 months back and it had the modem issue out of the box.... it’s a feature. Perhaps High sierra would be an improvement. :D

I’ll run the command before and after I upgrade.

Delete the FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext one and reboot. Any better?

Ok, cool, I suspect that's the problem. You have both the Apple FTDI driver and the FTDI driver that you installed in some previous version. Sierra (and probably all the way back to Mavericks) always loaded Apple's version of the driver and ignored the one directly from FTDI. Move the second one out of the /System/Library/Extensions/ directory (somewhere else, or just trash it). The reboot your Mac and see if you have any more issues. I'm pretty hopeful that this is the problem.

[EDIT] LOL, Matt beat me to it!

Well.... I won't know until Friday; The Mac is at a remote location. I deleted the KEXT and rebooted, but the Powerlinc is still offline. I may need to power cycle the Powerlinc to get things back to a good state, and then see what happens. I'll report back this weekend...

Using back-to-my-mac...

ls -lda /System/Library/Extensions/*FTDI*
drwxr-xr-x@ 3 root wheel 102 Sep 8 2016
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBFTDI.kext

Thanks. Yes, I'm pretty sure your problem is unrelated to the asw24b's. He is likely experiencing a high sierra driver problem, whereas it sounds like you have a malfunctioning PowerLinc.
