Ring Alarm - Retrofit Alarm Kit

I have been looking for a good way to bring wired door contacts into Indigo.

I have a new house with security wiring in place for all the doors and a couple of motion and glass break sensors.

I have looked at installing a Lyric security system with their 5800C2W retrofit wired panel (Indigo plugin + HomeKit maybe), Konnected (HomeKit maybe) and Ring (maybe Indigo to HomeKit).

When I was looking at Ring I noticed that they have a Retrofit Alarm Kit for $149... that appears to be a wave device. The literature says if you can't communicate between the Retrofit panel and the Ring Base to install the Ring zwave extender.... It's an 8 zone panel.

Since indigo is supporting some of the Ring sensors, I wondered if it was a possibility to bring in the retrofit panel for this purpose versus trying to use a Mimo2+ or install a full security system.

The Ring Retrofit Alarm Kit looks very interesting. I don’t think it existed when I did my house, or I was unaware of it. My house had a wired alarm kit when I bought it. I removed all keypads and motions and patched the drywall before painting the whole house. Wired contact sensors are still in place. However I did not use them and I installed z-wave contact sensors on all doors but none of the windows.

I am guessing that the retrofit kit could be connected to an indigo z-wave stick similar to the ring keypad. You would need to reverse engineer the messages from the retrofit kit similar to what was done for the Ring Keypad.

I had an old wired alarm system in place for several years. I've wanted to integrate it to Indigo for a long time, but there was no plugin to support the integration. Then I just decided to rip the panels apart and add a Fibaro Smart Implant to each motion sensor and program the interface in Indigo myself. It's been working flawlessly ever since.

Another alternative for you. Zooz Zen16. I have not used one. I have used other Zooz products and I am happy with them. The price point for 3 inputs is excellent. Much cheaper than the Ring device if it supports 8 inputs for $150. I am not sure if the Zen16 is supported by Indigo yet.

Thanks for the suggestions... I need to decide if I want an alarm system or just utilize the wired door contacts. House burned down in the neighborhood a couple of weeks ago and makes me think I should have my smoke detectors go to a central alarm.... Will post on where it goes from here !

Each alarm system I looked at had it's own quirks... having it's own app, having choices whether to monitor or not, connecting to existing wire systems, location of wiring (13 feet up in my case) etc.

The Ring Alarm seems to be a pretty good solution although you have to use a wave fire/smoke alarm listener to utilize an existing wired detector system. So I thought I would try the Retrofit Kit (RRK) and see if I can get Indigo to communicate with it enough to tie in the wired door contacts and make a few triggers and action groups for notifications. If I can't get it to work then I'll go to the route of the Ring Alarm (non-pro version).

Ring uses an app to include the RRK to the Wave controller in the Ring Alarm, so there is really no instructions on

So... I included the RRK with debugging, using the encrypted inclusion in Indigo. Seemed to include ok, but there are a few debug lines suggesting it's not responding to certain controller requests. It sets up basically 8 notification sensors after the sync.

I put a 1k resistor on a similar contact switch, which tested within spec for the RRK using a multimeter >0 and <5.7 k ohms. Could not get any notifications from the device.

Cannot get the RRK to transmit during its wake notification, or when I request a get status request either...

Any help would be appreciated in trying to get the device to communicate !!

Try excluding it, re-including it without encryption, and re-syncing it. That may not be a long term solution, but I want to rule out the extra overhead of all the encryption commands from being an issue while we troubleshoot it.

After that trip the inputs again and watch the Event Log for any debug messages (it may not update the device states but you may still see some commands). If you don't let me know and I'll have you send some custom raw commands to try to get it broadcasting commands to Indigo.

Synced without encryption.. Here's the log. Encrypted it's sets up basically 8 Notification sensors and without it sets up 9. No love on the inputs yet Matt. Send me the commands and I'll give them a shot. Thanks

Not sure where to go from here on getting this device to communicate. I've tried multiple encrypted/non-encrypted inclusions and the device does not respond to status requests, parameter reads or raw z-wave commands. Device is asleep or inoperable....

The device's LED will blink be green three times/every 3 seconds during the inclusion/sync process... the Indigo will finish it's include/sync on the event log.. and the device continues to blink 3 times/3 seconds then it will alternate Green/Red Led suggesting from the documentation below the device has not finished the inclusion and times out on inclusion, then ending with another three green blinks. So it seems it never completes the sync.

Here is a snippet from the instruction manual on classic inclusion. I turn on the inclusion in Indigo and jump to step 3. Not sure if step 2 impacts inclusion... not sure if it is a security key or a needed software input into the ring app.

Classic Inclusion Steps:

1. Initiate add flow in the Ring Alarm mobile application – Follow the guided add flow instructions provided in the Ring Alarm Mobile application
2. Select add manually and enter the 5 digit DSK pin found on the package of the Ring Alarm Retrofit Kit or the 5 digit DSK pin found on the inside of the top cover of the device.
3. Press the Learn Button below the battery terminals, and the device will enter classic inclusion mode which implements both classic inclusion with a Node Information Frame, and Network Wide Inclusion. During Classic Inclusion mode, the Green LED will blink three times every three seconds. When Classic inclusion times-out, the device will blink red and blue. (should be red/green as below?)

Led behavior for Inclusion - Blink Pattern
Smart Start Started - Green LED Three Times
Classic Inclusion Started - Green LED Three Times every three seconds.
Classic Inclusion Timed-Out - Green and Red several times.
Inclusion Successful (Authenticated S2) - Green LED on solid
Inclusion Not Successful (Self-Destruct) - Red LED on solid

Note:
• This product can be operated in any Z-Wave network with other Z-Wave certified devices from other manufacturers. All mains operated nodes within the network will act as repeaters regardless of vendor to increase reliability of the network.
• This is a SmartStart enabled product which can be added into a Z-Wave network by scanning the Z-Wave QR Code present on the product with a controller providing SmartStart inclusion. No further action is required and the SmartStart product will be added automatically within 10 minutes of being switched on in the network vicinity. This product can also be operated in any Z-Wave network with other Z-Wave certified devices from other manufacturers.



Anyone have any ideas on what to try would be greatly appreciated ! In way over my head !

There is an smoke alarm relay $22 that will tie a wired smoke alarm system to a panel. It has a N/O and a N/C output for whatever the application. Then just program it as a "Fire" zone.

For my alarm, I used a traditional panel as the backbone; a DSC panel for all the wired stuff. I added an envisalink to bring all the wired zones (32 of them) into indigo. Why so many zones? I added a bunch. I programmed the pannel to add "Automation" zones. So, wired devices that won't set off an armed alarm but can be used to do something in indigo.... like the doorbell, and some outside motion sensors.

I basically do my own monitoring, but I do pay envisalink to monitor my system for the insurance discount.

I'm not sure about the inclusion funniness, but let's move forward with sending manual commands to add multi-endpoint associations for group 2 back to the Z-Stick to see if that works. Try the following with the Z-Wave debug logging still enabled:

1) Use the Z-Wave->Send Raw Z-Wave Command menu command to send the following raw commands to the first device name as shown in the tab panel groups of the device dialog (likely called "Notification Sensor"):

0x8E 0x01 0x02 0x00 0x01 0x01

3) Capture Event Log snippets (debugging enabled) for when the inputs are changed, if any as well as the output from sending the raw command.

4) Presuming none or some of the inputs don't send commands, try sending the following commands (again to the first device in the group):

0x8E 0x01 0x02 0x00 0x01 0x02
0x8E 0x01 0x02 0x00 0x01 0x03
0x8E 0x01 0x02 0x00 0x01 0x04
0x8E 0x01 0x02 0x00 0x01 0x05
0x8E 0x01 0x02 0x00 0x01 0x06
0x8E 0x01 0x02 0x00 0x01 0x07

5) Presuming none or some of the inputs still don't send commands, repeat steps 1 to 4 but this time target the other devices in group. Does that get it working for other inputs?

Note I'm not expecting the sensor device states in Indigo to correctly update after this, but am hoping you start to receive some Z-Wave commands from the module when the inputs are changed (visible only in debug logging messages). You'll then be able to create Triggers on the raw commands being received.

Seems like the device thinks it’s not included…. The only response I have gotten from the device was a device get status command just after the Indigo inclusion finishes and before the inclusion led’s turn off on the device.

Thanks for your efforts. Let me know when this gets to be too much and we’ll shut it down.

I didn't realize the module was battery powered. You'll need to wake it so you can send those raw commands. If the manual doesn't have steps to wake it, then exclude and re-include (and re-sync) as it will probably stay awake a while after that.

I excluded/included without encryption. I was able to send the first command step 1, I tried to send Step 4 first line but the include led went out on the device and it failed. I then tried to send the first command in step 4 again and pressed the include button.... failed again. I tested the first contact and no report.

Although the manual says it can work with any 3rd party controller.... Could this device require to be encrypted and the 5 digit DSK pin entered to complete the inclusion process ??
