Multiple Z-wave errors and slow respons, going crazy here

Hi,

I have about 180 nodes and it all used to be very stable but for the last month or so it is getting more and more UNstable and is really making me crazy.
I get "allot" of no ack and Indigo is not receiving data from my nodes sometimes.
I have optimized my network, rebooted every node and Indigo, tried different interfaces (Gen5 and UZM), turned on Z-wave debug and tried to find something in there, disabled unnessesary plugins and so on, to no avail.

Intermittent the network is very slow, for example I have 3 dimmers in a virtual device group that can take up to 10s to turn on (they turn on in a slow sequence), they used to be momentary more or less. If I turn them off and then on again it is usually lightning fast.

Door sensors (multiple) is not reaching Indigo, they used to and my Fibaro smoke sensors start to beep when they can't reach Indigo (not so funny at night).

For some reason Indigo is trying to fetch energy data from my Qubino dimmers/switches temperature sub-node and I get no ack.
Re-syncing the node above resultet in this:

Some time I get flooded w/ the same data from multiple nodes (temperature for eample, 20+ messages w/ the same value in the log), removing/inserting the interface usually resolves it.

And so on...

Where should I start to get to the bottom with all this?

Could my Mac be to old/slow (normally 10% CPU load)? Can bad z-wave performance be mac-h/w related or is there something else going on?

Indigo 2021.1.1 (same problems w/ 7.5).
Mac Mini 2010 w/ 8GB RAM and High Sierra, SSD.

Basic debug advice

Switch off group of devices for several hours. Check if error continues
If no:
split last device group into subgroups and repeat with sub groups
If yes:
switch group back on and switch off next group
Etc

Devices are not just zwave but also motors, microwaves ,,,

And did you install anything new recently eg microwave, tv, ac…

I had the same problem few weeks ago a the problem was an external disk connected to the USB port near the Z-Wave stick. Changed port, everything fine.

@karl: thanks. I have now done some deeper study of the logs and found a few devices that are very old and almost always involved in the path for the offending nodes. Removed the old nodes, bought new and aggregated others, one do not need the level of control I thought when we built the house It is working better but not perfect. I have re-optimized all none battery powered devices and it went kind of ok. Some powered nodes failed the optimization and Indigo started to optimize known neighbours instead. After a reload of the interface (to break the neighbour optimization) and a manual status query of the node the optimization worked.

Now I have all the battery powered devices left to optimize, its a pita that Indigo start to optimize known neighbours when it fails to get an updated list from the node, having MANY neighbours to every battery device it takes forever when the battery device fail to wake up for example. Is it possible to disable the "optimize known neighbours"-function in Indigo? See attached node map where almost everything except battery devices is optimized.

I do actually have a USB disk connected for some time now (backup), it actually could be around that time the system started to go bananas. but it is connected to a USB hub and the interface is connected directly to the Mac Mini w/ a 3m extention cord and mounted to the inner roof of my study. The hub and the interface is actually in USB slot 2 and 3 on the Mini, maybe I should move them apart.

One group in particular and I see this in the debug log alot:

txRouteTries 27 does not sound great. I guess txRoute 23 0 0 0 means that the node bounce of of node 23. Node 23 is an Aeontec Smart switch that I now plan to take of my network and see what happens.

There myst be something strange going on here...
The errors is down to almost zero but the system is SLOW from time to time. Some communication initiated from the node is not reaching the controller at all. And com initiated from the controller (Indigo) is sometimes very slow.

Statistics for about 2 days. The AckAvg column is hidden to the right due to long rows.

The slow responce is intermittent and if a node is slow the first time its always lightning fast the second time I try it right after, it is like if the whole network is in a dormant state until I "force it" to wake up. There is always traffic over the zwave network so it can't be that the USB port is in low performance mode or something.

Using the Survey plugin and 10 passes the ping is always lightning fast for all nodes with some exeptions.

I have been pulling my hair for days now, is there anything I can try to get to the bottom of this?

Did a backup of the UZB tonight just in case (using my PC) and I noticed that when I plugged it in to my Indigo Mac again the loading of the stick/devices in the Indigo z-wave debug log was lightning fast. When I reload the controller from Indigo after the controller has been pluged in for a while the reading of the controller nodes is kind of slow, 5-10s compared to <1s when the controller was reloaded by physically removed from the USB-port and inserted again.
I also noticed that my virtual node groups that use to be slow to turn on was more or less instant on when activated.
This leads me to the conclusion that this is a hardware/software problem at the controller/mac/Indigo side and not a z-wave communication problem.

Any thoughts on this?

Looking over your Survey plugin results, and seeing this comment:

There is always traffic over the zwave network...

leads me to think the problem might be because of collisions or so much Z-Wave traffic that the controller gets confused and spins off into the weeds for several seconds (possibly retrying commands that are failing from collisions). Z-Wave networks aren't as robust as IP over WiFi. If you have a too much chatter you are going to potentially run into problems. Looking at the Survey results it looks like some devices have tens of thousands of messages (a Energiprobe - spis - Meter Total, and others).

Basically, you really shouldn't be seeing a continuous stream of traffic on the Z-Wave network (when viewing debug messages in Z-Wave), and if you are you should look at modifying module parameters to significantly reduce the quantity of unsolicited messages sent. If you have Schedules or scripts that are polling out lots of data from modules, those too should be throttled back.

No guarantee this will solve the problem of course, but it definitely is a red flag so we should eliminate it is a possible culprit while you are troubleshooting.

Thanks for the input. I do have some activity on the network (having so many nodes) but still not constant, there is seconds (some times minutes) between debug rows. When i activate a group of devices there is allot but that is normal I guess.
I did have huge problems with a few devices 3 weeks ago and I then did cut down on energy reports on all my devices and the problem kind of went away, for these devices anyway. I don't think the traffic is the bigest problem right now but who knows. I will look in to it.

I do have allot of problems w/ my garage lights and often they try to bounce of of node 34. This node was kind of close to the garage before but I have now relocated it to the other side of my house. I have run optimize on the problematic nodes (actually all of my nodes) many times but they still like node 34 best, how is this possible? There should be atleast 10+ other nodes in proximity they can use. How do nodes determine the best rout and is it remebered?
My nodes is actually findig almost every node I have as neighbours during an optimization and I hope there is some logic behind how they select the best route and remembers it, but I'm not so sure about that now :/

I will now replace some of my oldest nodes to see if things get better, kind of expensive test but I'm running out of options here.

I have a pretty large Z wave setup as well >180 nodes.

I think Matt is right - the less unneeded traffic the better.

Initially I found a number of devices were sending a lot of energy reports all the time. By manually cutting this down for each device this made a huge difference to the volume of traffic. There were some devices that I needed to manually send config settings to at the time, to change the energy report timings.

The other thing was managing action groups turning a lot of devices on or off. I changed this to some python code, action groups of ‘turn on, only IF device off’, and ‘turn off, only IF device ON’. This limited a lot of Z-wave traffic. I had a lot of z-wave devices eg. outdoor lights - so if a trigger to turn on occurred; would previously send 8 z-wave commands to turn 8 devices on every-time triggered. I changed this to same triggering, but only send z-wave on command if device is off. This likewise, hugely impact z-wave traffic. (Hopefully my description can be followed!)

Yes, energy reprorts can really bring things down and I have minimized them as much as I can. Some of my nodes is not possible to "shut up" even via parameters, they just dont do as I say They are high up on my list of devices I will replace in the future.

Digging even further I see ones again that node 34 (the one I moved about a week ago) is involved in about 1000 txRoute's the last week and almost always from devices it USED to be close to. I will replace it today w/ a new device and by that also a new ID. I will then redo optimize on all powered devices. I know I could exclude and reinclude the device to get a new ID but the device has missbehaved in other ways aswell so I would like to retire it anyway.

I will also replace 3 other devices today that is kind of old and involved in many txRoute's.

Hence the action group to check state and then send on or off if doesn’t match. Pretty straight forward with list of deviceID’s that change depending on circumstance.

This. It's usually an unnecessary optimization to check state first because the vast majority of times one doesn't care, you just want to make sure it's on/off. Also, in some cases sending multiple ON commands does different things (some dimmers, for instance will toggle between a dim value and 100 percent each time you send it an on).

Update!

I have now replaced many of the older devices and removed a few not so important ones. I'm now down to about 117 nodes.
I have also relocated the UZB-stick and made a "ground plane" (see image) for it.

Everything works allot better but I still have intermittent errors/no ack/slow ack and Indigo is not getting all messages initiated from the node side.

All rows related to "...garage..." is relevant here.
One can see that when device group "Ljusschema - Garage Jobba" is activated "Ljus garage - ytter N" is responding in aboput 100ms, the same for "Ljus garage - datorplats" but then the last dimmer in that group "Ljus garage - ytter S" takes 1.5s to respond. The nodes is with in 100mm of each other.

What also happens when the group is activated is that Indigo sets the Sonos volume and mute status when the lights go on (group goes on). This happens between the "datorplats" and "ytter S" (the slow node) goes on in the log.
On row 30303562 I guess Indigo is sending dim value to "ytter S", then the Sonos actions, and at row 30303569 Indigo (or controller?) re-sends request to "ytter S", about 1s later. Looks like the Sonos activities is blocking or is there something else going on? The light (ytter S) is not going on at the first try, ie only the ack is lost and thats's why Indigo re-sends command, it does not even get the message when the Sonos activities kick in.

I do get alot of ZEAL-errors for slow ack on "requestMeterLevel" events in the log, I guess these requests are more frequent than setting relay/dim level so they are more likely to throw errors.

Slow ack is not a really big issue, what is bugging me more is that communication initiated from a node is not always reaching Indigo. Especially my FGS223 w/ 2 physical momentary switches. I have applied the "fix" from this tread: https://forums.indigodomo.com/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=18165&p=137755#p137755 but it works only about 7 out of 10 times when using the physical switches. Indigo is not getting the message(s) (nothing in the log as far as I can see).

Many of my Fibaro Wall plugs do not respond (no ack) the first time on a command (on/off), the second time it always works.

Example when turning on "Ljus garage - ytter S" when I have turned off pulling in the device settings. Indigo still "queueing power / energy request of "158 - Ljus garage - ytter S" (activity detected)", why is that? There is alot of activity from this query and I gues my node is sending the energy report anyway so why ask for it?
