MacOS Mojave and Z-Wave Plus Aeotec Z-Stick USB Controller

Hi all, has anyone got Mojave working with the Aeotec Z-stick?

I had vaguely seen the warnings at https://www.indigodomo.com/downloads.html, but forgot and upgraded to Mojave. Following this the Z-stick was not recognised, despite re-seating and rebooting. Having seen other threads on USB deficiencies in MacOS, I then instigated the very long roll-back to High Sierra, which is where I am today. Sadly I do not have any detailed diagnostics.

I had no problems with the Aeotec under High Sierra, and my reading of https://www.indigodomo.com/blog/2018/01 ... orkaround/ is that it does not apply to the Aeotec Z-stick?

So two questions please:
- Has anyone got the Aeotec Z-stick working under Mojave?
- And if so, does anyone have advice on diagnostics and remediations if I reinstall Mojave and it's still not working?

Indigo is running on an IMAC (RETINA 5K, 27-INCH, 2017)

Thanks in advance

yup, have two instances of that combination working just fine.
you do have to reselect the USB port after the upgrades, though?

If it's a Gen5 Z-Stick, then you'll have to reselect the serial port since Mojave's modem driver names them differently than High Sierra (thanks Apple).

If it's the older Series 2, you might want to try installing the latest Silicon Labs driver and see if that makes any difference. I do have a Series 2 Z-Stick working on my test mini running Mojave.

Thank you both. It is a Gen 5 stick. I will give it another go (though probably not for a week as I am travelling).

FWIW, Just installed Mojave... had gen5 z-wave issue. Found this thread... renamed serial port driver as Jay mentioned using config menu for Z-wave. The one that worked for me was "usbmodem 14101"

Thanks for tip. All is well ... maybe. I really don't know since I just installed Mojave. Fingers crossed.

Installed Mojave with no issues - did reselect the USB port though.
But biggest problem for me - and considering going back... is the loss of the messages app script handler. (no more iMsg communication!)

Apple names modem ports based on which USB port on your Mac the device is plugged into. It did this before Mojave so if you move the stick to a different USB port you'll have to reselect the modem port. This likely still happens in Mojave, but to add complication on top if it the way they come up with the dynamic port name is different, requiring everyone to reselect the port... ;)

Timely information. You know, I had just moved the z-wave stick to a new usb plug....was trying out a a USB endescope camera for use with security spy to catch gophers. That’s probably why the stick stopped z-waving.

Re: MacOS Mojave and Z-Wave Plus Aeotec Z-Stick USB Controll

Indigo 7.2 is not recognizing my Gen2 Z-Wave controller in Mojave 10.14.1.

  1. I installed the latest version (5.0.6) of SiLabs drivers
  2. System Information recognizes the USB device (see attachment 1)
  3. When I configure the Z-Wave interface in Indigo, it does not see the serial port (see attachment 2)

Advice would be greatly appreciated. Downgrading to High Sierra is not an option - this is the 2018 Mac mini that refuses to boot with earlier versions of macOS.

Did you install the Silicon Labs driver? The Z-Stick Series 2 requires it.

[EDIT] sorry, I see that you said you did. If there isn't a serial port in the popup, then the driver isn't picking it up for some reason. If you have a USB 2.0 hub, you may try moving the stick to that. We've seen that some devices don't like USB 3 ports.

Problem solved. Needed to allow the SI Labs kernel extension to load. To do this, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General, click the Allow... button and enable the SI Labs driver.

I'm having the exact same issue mentioned below. The only difference is that I am using a Z-Stick Gen5. Would the SI labs kernel help in this case?

Re: MacOS Mojave and Z-Wave Plus Aeotec Z-Stick USB Controll

IIRC, on Mojave, the Gen 5 stick uses the standard USB library and not the SiLabs driver. A couple questions.

1. Did you try to select the stick under the Z-Wave menu? I believe it should be listed as `usbmodemXXXXX` or some such thing.
2. Do you have the stick plugged directly into the machine, or are you using a usb hub or extension cable?

1. The list doesn't provide any options. That's the problem. I can't choose my z-wave controller.
2. Yes it's plugged directly into the machine. I've tried all ports. No luck

Re: MacOS Mojave and Z-Wave Plus Aeotec Z-Stick USB Controll

I have found that Mojave can sometimes be hinky about releasing usb ports. This has been an issue with my battery backup and the apcupsd daemon (that the apcupsd plugin works with). From time to time, I have to unplug the unit when I reboot the server machine and then plug it back in after the machine is up.

If you haven't already done it, try unplugging the stick and cold reboot the server machine. Then plug the stick back in after it's done booting.

You might also try another usb port (although I'm sure you've already tried that).

EDIT: Sorry, I missed that you said you tried all ports.
