Troubleshooting Z-Wave Error

Hi,

I have a couple of Schlage door locks in my z-wave network. On rare occasion the back door fails to unlock when I come home. When this happens, the log says only

" Z-Wave Error send "Back Door Lock" unlock failed"

Where do I start with troubleshooting this?
Is it a failure of the sending unit or the lock?
How do I get more data?

The Lock is reporting 99% battery.
Here is a dump of its info:

Re: Troubleshooting Z-Wave Error

In this case I think it is a failure of the Z-Wave network to get the command to the lock. That is, the command to lock/unlock the door is failing to ACK back from the module. That would occur after the Z-Wave controller had retried the command and tried to find an alternate route to the lock. You might try moving a plugin (appliance / lamp) Z-Wave module that supports beaming (most of the new ones do) to an outlet closer to the lock to see if that helps.

:) Thanks Matt, I’ll try that. I have a Z-Wave repeater I’m not using that sounds like a good fit.

I forgot that I have a light switch 6 inches from the lock.

Looking at the switch's properties, it says:
Model = Relay Scene Switch, firmware 5.41
Manufacturer = Unknown
Neighbors = 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30, 32, 33, 34, 36, 37, 39, 41, 42, 47, 48, 49, 52, 53, 57, 58, 59, 60

Note the device # of the lock is 68 and is not in the switch's list. The switch is #35 and is in the locks neighbor list.

Is the switch not relaying? If not is it because did not learn of the lock 6 inches away?
Is learning neighbors a manual process that I have to do when I add something?

What if you optimize the Zwave network? You can find that as an option under the Zwave interface.

Trying that now. I’ll check in the morning to see what changed an report back.

Thank you.

Re: Troubleshooting Z-Wave Error

Mixed results after the overnight optimization:

Node 35, Driveway lights:

1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30, 32, 33, 34, 36, 37, 39, 41, 42, 47, 48, 49, 52, 53, 57, 58, 59, 60

Node 68, Back door lock:

1, 9, 20, 34, 35, 37, 49, 53, 66

Node 53, Z-Wave Repeater:

1, 6, 7, 8, 14, 18, 20, 23, 28, 33, 34, 35, 37, 38, 47, 48, 57, 58, 60, 68

The driveway lights switch did not learn of the door lock but the Z-Wave repeater that is now in an outlet 15 feet away from them did.

So, we’ll see...
