Re: Automate the non moving bit of a lock?!

Just have a BT dongle on an active usb extension cable positioned centrally in the loft. Then use eventscripts on the Mac to detect my phone (and the wife’s) approaching the house (turn on outside lights / announce events via Sonos as I enter the house). I can change the house profile based on who’s phone is detected. I find it a passive way to detect occupancy as my phone is constantly polling the BT without much effect on battery.

Aah cool, geofency seems to be working really well and not having any significant battery issues.
Only thing I guess is what happens if someone quits the app so something I’ll need to test.

Geofency fine with app not running; I’ve been using it with my family for months.

For presence, geofencing never worked reliably for me.

I ended up getting SmartThings primarily for the zigbee presence sensor, and then I wrote my own MQTT bridge plugin (shameless plug lol) so that the SmartThings presence sensor shows up as a simple on/off sensor.

Seems pretty reliable so far
