Worth upgrading my Z-Stick Series 2 to a Series 5 or 7?

I got this Z-Stick Series 2 (DSA02203-ZWUS) in 2013. Even so, it's way newer than my 2413U! :o

It seems to be working ok, but I wonder if there are any significant or noticeable advantages to be had from upgrading it to a Series 5 or Series 7?

I'd consider the Series 5 too as I've poked around and seen there are some possible issues with the Series 7.

Thanks!
Mike

If its working for you, then I'd say no - don't bother upgrading. I would, however, buy a series 5 or 7 as a backup because eventually your z-stick will fail. That way you can just unplug the old one, plug in the new one and then proceed to exclude/include your existing z-wave devices.

Thanks for the feedback!

Out of curiosity - so, when I do swap it out, I have to re-include all my Z-wave devices one by one or is there a magic Indigo replacement process I can find somewhere 'round here to migrate them all to the new Z-Stick?

If you have access to a Windows computer, there are utilities available to backup the Gen2 and push the data to the new stick.

Otherwise, you'll need to exclude each device and include it into the new stick, and then associate the existing Indigo Device definition with the new device address.

Upgraded to:

https://www.thesmartesthouse.com/collec ... -zst10-700

And kept my old zwave usb as an emergency backup.

I'm not eager to have to re-exclude/include devices again, if I have to change the Zwave controller again.

The new Zwave controller Seems to be faster, and more reliable.... and at $~30 USD not too expensive either...

Good to know. I don't have a Windows computer, but I'd get one in order to avoid doing all this manually.

I'm not eager to do that either! I think I'll grab one and keep the new one as the backup as someone suggested.

FWIT I did the move from a 2 to a 5 a couple of years ago and it didn't take that long with about 60 devices (about one afternoon or so) . It was actually fairly smooth sailing, and from what I've seen the automated way of moving them seems to have resulted in quite a few disasters. It did also make the response of so many units so much faster, I was pleased to have spent the time doing it.

Computer says no.

@Dave,

Out of interest, do you know which software you’re referring to?

The Aeotec only supports Gen5 upwards that I can see?

It looks like that's true, although there might be an old version archived somewhere (or someone round these parts might have it). A quick search didn't turn up the legacy tool. It's also possible that I might be crazy.

I *think* it might also be possible using OpenHAB, but that's just a guess. I wouldn't attempt that without a LOT of research.

I’m about to move my Mac to middle of the house so might just take the plunge and start afresh with the 5.

I might have read the post wrong but I thought that I noticed something about Indigo now supporting the network based z-wave interface - if that is the case (and I’ll check if you want me to) - you could just place the z-wave radio in the center of your house vice moving the bunch of stuff hooked up to your mac (assuming your setup is like mine and has a bunch of stuff like backup HD, Camect unit, Camect HD, Camect USB aux processor, Insteon USB Hub, Security SPY big HD- and other stuff I can’t think of right now - and that is with me remoting into my Indigo mac (no screen or keyboard)…

Fortunately my Mac does one thing and one thing only - Indigo.

I remote in via Splashtop for 99.9% of uses, so it doesn't matter where it is on the network.

It is now moved, and i'm not aware Indigo now/yet supports a network-based Zwave device but please do say if you think otherwise.

You might be thinking of Autolog's Hubitat plugin.
