RCS TXB16 Thermostat question - What are "setbacks"

I recently installed an RCS TXB16 to run my HVAC.

I've currently got Indigo setting "setpoints" based on season, time of day, and whether or not I'm away for multiple days, but I keep wondering what the Setback mode is, and how it would typically be used.

Can somebody please explain what the setback delta is and why it's there?

Thanks, in advance

Re: RCS TXB16 Thermostat question - What are "setbacks&

Hi Steve,

This is from the RCS protocol manual:

"SETBACK MODE. These commands cause the thermostat to go into and out of the setback mode. When the setback mode is turned on, the current setpoint will be changed to a new setback setpoint that is an offset from the current setpoint by a preset number of degrees called the setback delta. The default setback delta is 8F/4C. If the main mode (not setback mode) is set to OFF or AUTO, the setback command is ignored (mode must be in COOL or HEAT)."

Basically, you use the setback mode to temporarily set the temperature back (up or down, depending on if in COOL or HEAT mode) when you leave the house.

Regards,
Matt

Matt,

Thanks for the info. I caught that in the manual, but didn't quite understand it. Until your last sentence....

So.... If I have the entire thing controlled by motion sensors and a "schedule" of when I'm home and not, changing the Set Point as needed, I can pretty much safely ignore the SetBack completely.... Which is what I was trying to find out.

Thanks again, Steve

Yep, the Set Back becomes much less interesting when you are using Indigo to control all the logic. It could still be used as a technique to toggle the temperature up/down a few degrees, but I'd opt to just change the temperature Set Point like you described.

Matt
