Serious follow-up question - How should delayed events work?

Say you have one or more sensors monitoring a particular area, and you want a delay to make sure it's not a spurious activation. My initial thought is to recheck the activation requirements at the end of the specified delay, and if they all still match, then it's a good activation.

What should happen if the conditions changed during the delay? Say it's a 10 second delay, and the sensor goes off and then back on in that 10 second window. Should the timer have been cancelled when the sensor first went off then restarted when he sensor went back on?

Thoughts?

I do this frequently using the timed devices plugin. I use a persistence timer to delay immediate actions.

I restart the timer. What I do (and want) is to have a delay from last possible detection.

This is how I have my motion detection setup using variables and scripts. I have a timer of two minutes.

If I am monitoring a room that has two or three sensors, as soon as one is triggered, the start time for motion in the room is logged and a two minute timer kicked off. At any point during the two minutes if one of the sensors is triggered, then the two minute timer is reset. At the end of the two minutes if all sensors are off, then the motion off time is set to the time the last sensor switched off. I also monitor the states of the sensors so that in a control page I can show the room / zone that is active and which of the sensors is currently active and got triggered.

I use the following State Image Sel Enumeration to show when motion is active or not: MotionSensor and MotionSensorTripped
