I monitor my two wooden gates with open/close sensors that have inputs for external contacts - works great

If I wanted to have a way to lock and unlock them I would look into using linear actuators and activate / deactivate them with rely contacts - that should work but I have not done it myself. You might also be able to somehow fit a standard z-wave door lock on the gate but that would take some work to get it to fit and they are not rated for use outside use.

For my open close sensors I just use old plastic bottles with a cable gland through the top. I have (in the past) used plastic project boxes but they are harder to waterproof.

I wish the HA industry would make for stuff that is water proof and more stuff for gates. Right now you have to MacGyver it :-(

You need one of these.

https://www.theelectricgateshop.co.uk/M ... od_ID=1857. (Along with the booster depending on what voltage you supply)

I have my texecom alarm supply the power but could be a relay.

It's incredibly strong and can be opened with key or optional button on the inside.
Best of all though if you supply power it keeps the lock unlocked potentially all day but it still has a catch that holds the gate shut, needing a decent push to open it
You can then lock remotely.

Alternatively you can set the lock to force the gate to open when unlocked, it gives the gate big push and the gate opens. I don't see as much use in that setting though.

I then also have a metal door sensor on it connected to my alarm as well. All in metal conduit.

The best but is remote control of it when not there. I have considered putting a keypad on the other side for one off access by gardeners and builders etc but I either just unlock it and have pop up notice on my phone when the gate is opened so I can check camera and see it's who it's supposed to be. If not I can trigger the alarm. Or ask them to call me when they arrive at the house and I unlock as required.

Plus now I can control it by Homekit I can just share access to it to trusted people.
