Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

Motion Sensor II not sending button 2 command.
I tried two of these new Insteon motion sensors II. None of them sends a button 2 command when I put them in bright sunlight or a dark drawer. Button 1 works fine.

Did anybody get button 2 to work with the default day/night sensitivity? I don't have an Insteon Hub to try their app. It looks like a previous poster had to first make some changes in the Insteon app.

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

I'm not sure whether this is what you're seeing, but I can tell you from experience with Motion Sensor I's that the reaction to light/dark is far from instantaneous (by design) - it takes a few minutes before the unit sends group 2 on/off.

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

Yes, I remember this from the old-style motion sensor that it takes like 5 minutes for the button 2 command. But these two new sensors II don't do anything for hours when I change their light exposure.

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

The other thing (also a carry over from Motion Sensor I's) is that the dusk threshold can be set. Perhaps yours is set to a value such that it never senses dusk because it is always too bright or never senses dawn because it is always too dark relative to the threshold?

There is a command in Indigo for setting this: Interfaces>INSTEON/X10 Power Line>Set Motion Sensor Day/Night Sensitivity.... I'm not 100% sure this command works for MS II's, but I suspect it does.

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

The MSII totally changed how many settings work (i.e. no motion sensitivity setting, extremely nerfed settings around day/night). If it were a straight-forward thing, then I could share the raw commands. Unfortunately, in classic Insteon style, the API is pretty terrible (as are the docs for it). We haven't spent the time going back and forth with them to try to decipher how it works without screwing up the other settings, so at this time I can't even give you the raw commands. It is on the list for future releases.

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

I just hooked up an Insteon 2844-222 and it seems to be doing its job; except that in the log I keep seeing
“Motion Sensor” on (button 19)
Does anyone know what button 19 is?

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

I have to move on my old configuration as m;y IMAC passed out. Current configuration is G5 MACOS 10,5,8 Indigo 5. Does Insteaon motion sensor 2 work on this system. I see the address of my sensor when creating a new device but no answer from the sensor to the software.

Mac OS Montery 12.2.1 macmini
Indigo Pro 2021.2
Powerlinc 2413U

No. Support for the MSII was added in Indigo 7.0, which requires Mac OS X 10.7 or later.

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

I just bought some of these Motion II sensors. I followed the instructions above to turn off the motion light and it still flashes constantly. Any other advice? Is there a different string for the Firmware 47 version? Is the solution to buy an insteon hub and set the value from there? (please say no.)

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

Can you copy/paste the Event Log results of you sending the raw Insteon command into a reply for me? I'd like to make sure the command is being sent and received by the module correctly.

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

Thanks; should have included that. Here it is:

Code: Select all
2019-03-30 10:41:57.998   Sent INSTEON   "Motion Sens 2 Side Door and Gate" raw insteon command (20 02   00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 DE; ack: 02)

I sent the setting twice, and it is still flashing.

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

I'm going to ping Smarthome to see if we can get some more details from them.

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

I received some documentation and Indigo is definitely sending the correct command.

Do you have the motion sensor USB powered? Because there is a note in the documentation that says, "LED will still very quickly flash when this option is disabled and device is battery powered." So it sounds like if it is battery powered it may not be possible to 100% disable the LED.

Re: INSTEON Motion Sensor

No, it is not USB powered.

This is so counterintuitive. You would think that if it were not hooked up to a reliable power source it would actually flash less in order to maintain the battery.

Finding a reliable motion detector is very frustrating. Do you have any suggestions?

Z-Wave motion sensors (in our experience) are much more reliable.
