INSTEON I/O-Linc

This topic is to discuss the I/O-Linc from INSTEON. This can include any of the kits (garage door, remote access, door chime, etc.) that include the I/O-Linc.

Device Details
How to use with Indigo

Re: INSTEON I/O-Linc

I still find it very confusing in how to set up the IO linc in momentary C mode and have it work properly.
I will be experimenting on this in the weeks to come.
How do you know that the unit is in any momentary mode after you set it momentary mode C?
I'd like to see the settings for the device and an example of what a control page would look like after setting it up.

I have been using it I believe in Mode A. and having an indicator showing the doors current state and then by looking at that determine whether to press the button to toggle it.
I'd like to have it showing the state and having a button that says close the door and have the unit itself determine if the door is closed and then activate it if it is not closed.
I think it would be more reliable that way since it is more of a local control rather than me "seeing" the state and determining whether to press the toggle button or not.
I've had many times that the state of the door is incorrect and I toggle it by pressing the button, very unreliable and confusing. I even have an event update state every 1 hour but that again is not a nice way of handling it.

I know of a person (not using Indigo) but using a system from Smarthouse and he has the same problem as me. He could not figure out how it get it working in Mode C. Also when in mode A he had problems indicating that right state of the door.

Any input would be appreciated and most likely appreciated by more just me.

Dave

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with using the different momentary modes. Hopefully someone that has used them will chime in.

Re: INSTEON I/O-Linc

I have an i/o linc and want to know if it's possible to add a push button as a sensor input. WE have an intercom system and I want to be able to detect when someone rings the bell. It's not a transformer type bell - just a 2-wire intercom with an electronic bell of a few volts so I'm thinking the doorbell detector circuit is not needed. If I connect the button leads from the intercom speaker to the sensor input- will the closed circuit register as a sensor event to the i/o linc?

Re: INSTEON I/O-Linc

I also have a doorbell hooked up to an intercom with an electronic chime. It took me forever to figure it out because the doorbell circuit did not have the voltage go to completely to zero when pressed. After many many tries, I gave up on trying to use the doorbell to signal the I/OLink. Instead, I bought an audio-visual probe (see MacHomestore.com or Smarthome) and hooked it up to the speaker leads in the electronic chime. I then hooked that up to the I/Olink and the system works well, triggering my MacMini to play to play a .WAV doorbell chime file, which is then broadcast through my whole house audio system.

You may find other solutions work for your doorbell, but this is the only thing that would work for me. I had made a post about it if you want to do a search.

Thanks ham- hmm that module is discontinued but it sounds like a resistor might do the same trick. Will try it and see what I can figure out- thanks!

Just had my i/o linc seemingly go off sync. Still in same place/same connections as before but Indigo can't seem to reach it. Have unplugged replugged and tried to resync and redefine links. Any suggestions?

Re: INSTEON I/O-Linc

Looks like either you have signal noise that's keeping it from getting (or responding to) the request or maybe it's just failed. Move it to the same outlet as your PowerLinc and see if it will sync.

Re: INSTEON I/O-Linc

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but here goes:

I need help organizing my cable clutter with the I/O Lincs that I have hooked up to my Dakota Receiver. Right now, I have 4 I/O-Lincs and they are connected to a power strip via simple 6 inch extension cables (very handy for wall warts that take up too much space on powerstrip). Then I have the low voltage wires from the inputs going to a Dakota receiver's 4 various outputs. The result is a tangle of wires and cables and I can't quite figure out the best way to organize this.

I would love to see how other people are organizing their nest of cables. I'm likely going to be adding more to this (EZIO i/o units, sprinkler system) so I'd love to see how people are mounting and managing their cables.

Any one willing to share their tricks of the trade?

Hopelessly disorganized,

Macguyincali.

Re: INSTEON I/O-Linc

I had asked a similar question here. Might be a better place as there are probably a bunch of us in the same boat. Also a recommendation for a good rack on wheels that is not too expensive would be nice.

Maybe Matt or Jay could re-title that thread to something more descriptive, like cable/hardware organization.

Re: INSTEON I/O-Linc

For powering bulky plugin/wall wart modules I like to use power cable splitters like these. Note I don't necessarily recommend that reseller, it was just the first link that I found that has one that looks like the ones I bought.

Re: INSTEON I/O-Linc

I've noticed some very strange behavior with my module. I bought the garage kit and i have it working - I just don't know if I have it working correctly.

First, there appears to be a really long lag (a minute or two) before i can trigger the relay a second time. This is a persistent issue.

Second, my log is cluttered with repeated post (shown below). the multiple on/off commands may be the reason for the lag….

any advice would be appreciated.

thanks,
Richard

(note the log reflects me opening the door with my standard clicker the using the standard wall switch to close it - no indigo or insteon remotes were used)

Re: INSTEON I/O-Linc

Forgot to mention that I have it setup as shown in the wiki http://www.perceptiveautomation.com/wiki/doku.php?id=insteon_devices:io_modules&#i_o-linc_by_smarthome
except that i also have the first checkbox ticked: Input sensor sends INSTEON ON command (uncheck to send off).

Re: INSTEON I/O-Linc

The long lag time could be because of some kind of signal noise, but the repeated messages indicate perhaps something else is wrong. First, disconnect the sensor and see if those repeated things continue and see if it makes opening/closing the output any faster. If so, then it seems likely that the sensor is wired incorrectly or has some kind of short.

If that doesn't change anything, try doing a factory reset on the iolinc and see if that helps.
