Emergency Panic alarm-probably from AD2PI ?Plugin downgrade?

At 0923 my alarm went off with an Emergency Panic alarm.
It turns out that this is zone 99 and comes from the keypad panic # and * together.

Never had this happen before.

I can only think that this is from the AD2PI.

Here are the event log lines:
2023-10-06 09:23:53.307 AD2USB Alarm Interface Error Error reading from AlarmPanel:decoding bytes to string - error:'utf-8' codec can't decode byte 0x9a in position 3: invalid start byte

I can only think that it is the AD2PI that triggered it. I have been having more problems with using the AD2PI since going to the latest plugin.
I have downgraded the plugin to version 1.8.2

I am now getting the following messages in my event log:

Is there any issue with the downgrade right now?

Re: Emergency Panic alarm-probably from AD2PI ?Plugin downgr

Sorry you're having these issues. It's definitely bad messages coming from the decoder. The why is the strange part. As versions were released, certain device states an even triggers were changed. I generally had kept this to a minimum.

You will need to re-create Keypad Devices and Zone Groups (if you use them). They certainly changed from v 1.8.

If you see more messages "Error device "<NAME>" state key <SOME_STATE_NAME not defined (ignoring update request)" you're going to want to recreate that device.

What happens when version 1.8 won't work anymore?

Re: Emergency Panic alarm-probably from AD2PI ?Plugin downgr

I believe you said you were running a network based AlarmDecoder. What are you running on your Raspberry Pi to connect from Indigo? Are you running the ser2sock daemon on the Pi? Or are you running AlarmDecoder's Keypad Program on Mac, Windows, or Linux (ref: https://www.alarmdecoder.com/wiki/index ... der_Keypad)?

I looked at the panelMessage log in some more detail today. It leads me to believe you are running a Keypad Emulator and using Indigo to connect that software.

As for version 1.8.x, in summary: if you're going to use the latest supported version of Indigo, you need to be on the 3.x Plugin.

Indigo 2023.1 was released this month and no longer supports Python 2. See viewtopic.php?f=2&t=27476.

Some history: I took over plugin development from berkinet with version 1.6.1 in April 2022. I did this before Indigo announced their migration to Python 3. So while hadn't planned on making major changes to the plugin when I took it over, I had to make some changes to ensure Python 3 compatibility. Version 3.0 onward requires Python 3. Version 1.8.2 (the last Python 2 version) won't work with Indigo 2023.1 and onward. Given Indigo's path, I don't plan on making and changes to the 1.8.x code. But it's all on GitHub and available and anyone is welcome to it.

I also added support for the latest AlarmDecoder firmware in version 3.2.0. AlarmDecoder firmware versions 2.2a.6 and the newer version 2.2a.8.8 are the only two versions that I have tested and work with the plugin. AlarmDecoder made major changes to LRR messages in their latest firmware.

I don't recommend sticking w/1.8 for the long term. I appreciate everything was working fine before your upgrade. And I know that is frustrating. But I think you have something else going on.

Re: Emergency Panic alarm-probably from AD2PI ?Plugin downgr

I understand that you came in in the middle and are in a difficult place.
I have a brand new AD2PI with the Raspberry Pi system as loaded by Alarm Decoder.
I used the Keypad Webapp provided by them to configure the AD2PI.
I know nothing about ser2sock . I think Alarm Decoder people have loaded it into the AD2PI.
I have to admit that I am "stupid" when it comes to Linux and certainly Python.
Basically, I just want to plug things in and have them work.

Right now, nothing works. I am using version 1.8.2 of the Plugin. Indigo 2022.2, and the firmware on the PI is 2.2a..8.8.
The keypad device doesn't have the current state. Right now the alarm is disarmed but the keypad status is as below

If you have any suggestions, including a detailed step by step process, to help me I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, I guess,bottom line, is that I am SOL and I just have to accept that.

Re: Emergency Panic alarm-probably from AD2PI ?Plugin downgr

I am wondering if you're running BOTH ser2sock and the Web Interface. That should be easy to check.

1. I am assuming you have a Pi with the AlarmDecoder image installed as referenced here: https://www.alarmdecoder.com/wiki/index ... spberry_Pi

2. Login to the Raspberry Pi via a terminal. Run the command:
Code: Select all
ps -ef | grep ser2sock

If you see output similar to this, you're running ser2sock.
Code: Select all
$ ps -ef | grep ser2sock
pi         341     1  0  2022 ?        2-23:56:16 /usr/local/bin/ser2sock -d -f /etc/ser2sock/ser2sock.conf -P /var/run/ser2sock/ser2sock.pid

3. Where is the AlarmDecoder WebApp running? The Pi? Your Mac w/Indigo? Another computer?

Re: Emergency Panic alarm-probably from AD2PI ?Plugin downgr

I assume I am running with that version of the Alarm Decoder image.

I logged into the pi (a major step with Linux for me) and ran the command you suggested.
Here is the result:

pi@AlarmDecoder:~ $ ps -ef | grep ser2sock
pi 386 1 0 Sep27 ? 01:09:20 /usr/local/bin/ser2sock -d -f /etc/ser2sock/ser2sock.conf -P /var/run/ser2sock/ser2sock.pid
pi 3898 3883 0 18:45 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto ser2sock
pi@AlarmDecoder:~ $

I think that means that ser2sock is running.

I don't know where the WebApp is running. I access it like a web page from a browser on the Mac running the indigo local server and another Mac on the Network.
I use the address: http://alarmdecoder.local
I follow the documentation: https://www.alarmdecoder.com/wiki/index ... der_WebApp

Re: Emergency Panic alarm-probably from AD2PI ?Plugin downgr

Yes, it looks like ser2sock is running. I am guessing both ser2sock and the AlarmDecoder Web App are both set to read from the serial port. It's just a guess, but that may be what is causing you trouble. If you're running ser2sock you want the WebApp to use that connection instead of connecting to the serial port. I use ser2sock (it is the default on AlarmDecoder's Pi image) and have no issues. Four steps to try this: check ser2sock settings, change WebApp Settings to use ser2sock, Reboot Pi, and upgrade to latest Plugin.

Step 1, confirm ser2sock settings. From a Terminal on your pi the cat command will list the contents of the ser2sock configuration file. The command is
Code: Select all
cat /etc/ser2sock/ser2sock.conf

...and the output should look like this:

Code: Select all
$ cat /etc/ser2sock/ser2sock.conf
# ser2sock sample configuration
#

[ser2sock]
# Fork into the background?  Default: 0
daemonize = 1

# Serial device
device = /dev/serial0

# Serial device baudrate
baudrate = 115200

# Port to listen for connections on.  Default: 10000
port = 10000

# Enable encryption?  Default: 0
#encrypted = 1

# CA certificate for this install
#ca_certificate = /etc/ser2sock/certs/ca.pem

# SSL certificate
#ssl_certificate = /etc/ser2sock/certs/server.pem

# SSL key
#ssl_key = /etc/ser2sock/certs/server.key

# SSL CRL location
#ssl_crl = /etc/ser2sock/ser2sock.crl

# Allow binding only to a specific interface.  Default: 0.0.0.0
#bind_ip = 127.0.0.1

# Send terminal init string.  Default: 0
#send_terminal_init = 0

# Raw communications mode disables all sending of !SER2SOCK messages. Default: 0
raw_device_mode = 1

# Keep incoming connections open when the serial device is disconnected?  Default: 0
preserve_connections = 1

# Delay (in milliseconds) between attempts to open the serial device.  Default: 5000
#device_open_delay = 5000

Please post your config file o the forum. There's nothing sensitive in it and it's probably the defaults. Take note of the port settings. Its is probably set to 10000 (the default).

Step 2, using the AlarmDecoder Web App run through the Initial Setup again. You can find this via the links for "Settings", "Advanced", and "Setup" from the Alarm Decoder Web App home page. This is the reference from AlarmDecoder for Setup. https://www.alarmdecoder.com/wiki/index ... tial_Setup. Follow along their guide and my notes below.

1. In the "Device Type Settings" screen, I am guess your "Device Location" is set to "Local Device." (I've attached the screen from the AlarmDecoder guide). Change it to "Network Device." This means the WebApp will communicate with the AlarmDecoder via ser2sock since that is already running versus over the serial port of the Raspberry Pi.

2. In the "Network Device Settings" enter the IP address for your Raspberry Pi in the "Address" field (I am guessing is is 10.0.0.113 from your logs) and the ser2sock port settings in the "Port field". This is probably 10000.

3. In the "AlarmDecoder Settings" make sure you're using "Honeywell/Ademco", the "Keypad Address" you configured on your panel is correct, the "AlarmDecoder Address Mask" is "FFFFFFFF" and select "Deduplicate messages." I am guessing you do not need to enable "Emulate Long Range Radio" or Zone and Relay expanders but I can't be sure. I recommend you leave it off if unsure.

Step 3. Once all those changes are made reboot your Pi. You can do this from the Terminal program with:
Code: Select all
sudo reboot

Step 4. You're on the newer firmware so its best to go back to the latest version of the Plugin.

Re: Emergency Panic alarm-probably from AD2PI ?Plugin downgr

Here is what I got. I believe they match your post:

pi@AlarmDecoder:~ $ cat /etc/ser2sock/ser2sock.conf
# ser2sock sample configuration
#

[ser2sock]
# Fork into the background? Default: 0
daemonize = 1

# Serial device
device = /dev/serial0

# Serial device baudrate
baudrate = 115200

# Port to listen for connections on. Default: 10000
port = 10000

# Enable encryption? Default: 0
#encrypted = 1

# CA certificate for this install
#ca_certificate = /etc/ser2sock/certs/ca.pem

# SSL certificate
#ssl_certificate = /etc/ser2sock/certs/server.pem

# SSL key
#ssl_key = /etc/ser2sock/certs/server.key

# SSL CRL location
#ssl_crl = /etc/ser2sock/ser2sock.crl

# Allow binding only to a specific interface. Default: 0.0.0.0
#bind_ip = 127.0.0.1

# Send terminal init string. Default: 0
#send_terminal_init = 0

# Raw communications mode disables all sending of !SER2SOCK messages. Default: 0
raw_device_mode = 1

# Keep incoming connections open when the serial device is disconnected? Default: 0
preserve_connections = 1

# Delay (in milliseconds) between attempts to open the serial device. Default: 5000
#device_open_delay = 5000

I have used the WebApp to make your suggested changes.

The device location has always been set as a "network" device" not local.
I did change the address from "Local" to the IP adress of 10.0.0.113
The rest were already as you suggested.

Re: Emergency Panic alarm-probably from AD2PI ?Plugin downgr

In short, no.

For a while I couldn't even talk to the Alarm Decoder. The server would time out trying to read the configuration. It was only after I created a new Keypad device and even saved the partition that I stopped getting the server timeout.

I am still getting the 216 and 116 error messages. If I do enable the "Deduplicate" they stop do stop coming but that, I think, is just hiding the problem.
