Advantages of Active RFID

Advantages of Active RFID for use with Automation

Most of the RFID technology available today is based upon passive RFID technology. With Passive RFID, a transceiver must excite the tag which turns the RF signal into energy to return a signal to the transceiver. We have decided not to use passive RFID, although it does have many uses.

With Active RFID, the RF receiver is passive, constantly monitoring the environment for transmissions from active tags which have an integral power source.

At iAutomate.com, we have standardized on Active RFID since 2004 for access control and automation. Here are some of the advantages:

•Long Range - Up to 450' with optional antennas
    •Handsfree
•Can detect when a tag enters the range of a reader and use as a trigger
•Can determine the signal strength of a tag within the range of a reader and use as a trigger
•Can detect when a tag *leaves* the range of a reader after a timeout and use as a trigger
•Can detect if a tag is moving (using integral motion sensor) and use as a trigger
•Can detect if a tag is at rest (using integral motion sensor) and use as a trigger
•Can monitor the battery life of tag
    •Can determine age of tag
•On most tags, the integral reed switch can be used as a sensor and used as a trigger
•On Key Fob tags, pushbuttons can be used to manually trigger events
•One tag can be used for both serial automation readers, and compatibility with 26 bit wiegand card access systems
