Was this working before? If so, what's been changed recently?

This looks like the error you get when a device state has bad name (must start with alpha character). But the code checks for that and renames the state if it happens. So I'm not sure what's going on.

If you turn on detailed debugging, you should see what device is getting updated just before the error message. Post that section of the log file.

Warning I'm leaving in the morning for 17 days out of the country, so I won't be able to follow up on this until I get back.
