Yeah, that's what you're supposed to use. The state in the thermostat is a holdover from before the separate devices and probably should have been removed.

Now for the fun stuff.

My thermostat happens to be in a place that the sun hits it directly in late afternoon. Now, I can use the sun incidence from the Cynical Weather plugin to change to a comfort setting that ignores that sensor during those hours.
