Really large Lutron install

Thanks for the clarification re: preference file.

I have four independent radio ra 2 main repeaters with 4 aux repeaters each on a large property — for a client.
The main repeaters are connected to a Barionet 50 serially. I have a few of the lutron functions programmed in the B50 to send/receive Ra2 commands serially.
The B50 use the rest Indigo API to post status of devices to variables. Indigo functionality allows controlling the individual lutron devices and triggering the virtual keypad in the main repeater.

One of the reasons to use this B50 architecture was to isolate the main repeaters from each other on the same broadcast domain. I had the issue of main repeaters communicating with each other and causing errors.

B50 Code is very much in alpha state.

Would consider integration of the B50 code with your plugin if there is enough interest.

Re: Anyone using the serial connect option for Lutron?

Why use the serial connections instead of ethernet? What does that buy you? How does that isolate the repeaters that using an ethernet connection wouldn't?

Re: Anyone using the serial connect option for Lutron?

The main repeaters communicate with each other on the L2 network layer. So in the senario I descirbed the normal way to isolate is to use VPN or routers.

In a large flat domain(/22 addresss) the multicast and broadcast traffic does not play well with the NIC card on the main repeater - issues with firmware update, repeaters hearing each others command etc.

I have not see a tech brief from Lutron on best practices around the density of independent system.

Re: Really large Lutron install

I split this discussion to a new thread.

Now I understand the issue. I never thought of that issue. The mods I have work if the repeaters are on the same or different subnets, since it's a telnet connection and doesn't care about multi-cast or broadcast.

Re: Really large Lutron install

But to get back to the original topic. Can you connect to the serial ports on the B50 over a network protocol from the Indigo Mac? If so, then you might be able to use this new plugin to integrate all the Lutron devices through Indigo seamlessly.

The plugin may work then. Will give it a try.

It's not ready yet, but if you're able to connect to one of the B50 ports with the existing plugin, then I could sure use the preferences file for the config that does so.

Do You think the plugin will work for the architecture attached?

Re: Really large Lutron install

If you can connect the plugin to the remote (B50) serial port using the Network Socket or RFC-2217 connection protocols, then you should be able to do all Lutron controls from the Indigo server without any of the REST API calls.

The best way to test that is to use the current plugin to see if you can connect to any of the repeaters. If so, then with the new plugin you should be able to control them all.
