New error: No JSON object could be decoded

This has started appearing in my event log. I haven't (to my knowledge!) changed anything recently.

uniFiAP Error in Line 6746 has error=No JSON object could be decoded, receiving DICTs for 192.168.1.5; check unifi logfile; if this happens to often increase DICT timeout
uniFiAP Error ... APdict 192.168.1.5 error in the JSON data, #of bytes:95
uniFiAP Error ... JSON=Study-BZ.v4.0.80# mca-dump | sed -e 's/^ *//' Study-BZ.v4.0.80# xxxThisIsTheEndTokenxxx1...
... udy-BZ.v4.0.80# xxxThisIsTheEndTokenxxx1
uniFiAP Error APdict 192.168.1.5 forcing restart of msg after due to error count in json

Re: New error: No JSON object could be decoded

How often does it happen?

It is an indication the that link to the UniFi device is not working properly. Eg. It only gets half the json.

If it happens sporadically ( > 15 minutes) it’s not a problem. If it happens every 2 minutes we need to look into it

Re: New error: No JSON object could be decoded

Hi Karl,

Apologies for the slow response - head down on work stuff the last few days.

It's a bit random, but frequent. Here are times of the last few instances. I can't see any regularity to it, or relate it to what's happening elsewhere, either in Indigo, or devices moving physically around the house.

08:13:35
08:17:04
08:17:57
08:18:26
08:19:35
08:23:06
08:23:56
08:24:41
08:25:06
08:29:53

This last one was a variant I haven't noticed before:

Code: Select all
3 Dec 2020 at 08:29:53
uniFiAP Error                   in Line 6746 has error=No JSON object could be decoded, receiving DICTs for 192.168.1.5;  check unifi logfile; if this happens to often increase DICT timeout
uniFiAP Error                   ... APdict  192.168.1.5 error in the JSON data, #of bytes:156
   uniFiAP Error                   ... JSON=echo ThisIsTheAliveTestFromUnifiToPlugin >> /var/log/messagesStudy-BZ.v4.0.80# mca-dump | sed -e 's/...
...  udy-BZ.v4.0.80# xxxThisIsTheEndTokenxxx2

Re: New error: No JSON object could be decoded

it seems that sometimes it works
08:13:35
it receives 1/minute .. this is 3.5 minutes, no error message
08:17:04
and then it does not:
08:17:04
08:17:57
08:18:26
08:19:35
could you switch on debug for 5 minutes
..

then post
/Library/Application Support/Perceptive Automation/Indigo 7.4/Logs/com.karlwachs.uniFiAP/plugin.log
for those minutes,

or better send me in email to karlwachs at me com

Re: New error: No JSON object could be decoded

After a bit of emailing back and forth between Karl and me, something magical happened....

TL;DR: keep your Unifi controller & AP firmware up to date.
---

Hi Karl,

This isn't very helpful for your debugging, but I dug into your comment about old software on the AP.

My Unifi controller wasn't reporting any firmware upgrades available for the APs, but I did notice that the controller software was ~18months old. So I updated that.
Then firmware upgrades for the APs were notified, so I updated those.
My network definitions didn't survive the upgrades properly, so I recreated the networks.

And hey presto... no more errors from the plugin, presence is reported properly, and everything is working fine once again!

So the good news is my problem has been solved. The bad news is that we may never find out what the problem actually was.

Thanks for your help!
