Any hope for Google device access API?

I don't know if this topic and plugin is completely dead, but I'll try a post anyway.

I'm one of those unfortunates that followed Google's instructions to migrate my Nest account when I had just a NestCam and Protect without understanding the ramifications. No big deal at the time except that it would not work with my Google managed account (separate story).

Well, I just installed a Nest Thermostat, expecting there to be an API and plugin as I had read about. Obviously, I was stymied in my efforts for reasons well known to previous Nest users and now mostly understood by me.

Apparently, Google has a device access API that is supposed to replace the Nest API for commercial developers and is supposed to be available to individuals with households of no more than 5 users. Does anyone know if this API has the potential to replace the Nest API and allow this plugin to work once again? And, if so, is it available yet?
